Santo Domingo.- The Ikea department store will open its doors to Dominican shoppers tomorrow Wednesday with an attractive catalogue featuring furniture and some major appliances.

Since 2008 the Swedish multinational company began construction with president Leonel Fernandez heading the groundbreaking near the Americana department store, on Kennedy avenue, becoming the retail giant’s first outlet in Latin America.

The store, maker of furniture and of decorative articles was built at a cost of more than US$85 million, created 563 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect ones.

It’s expected to spur competition, and provide better deals for shoppers, who can also benefit from its reasonably priced restaurant and a playground for the kids.

The president of Ikea for Dominican Republic and Canary Islands, Anders Alm, is reportedly a resident of the resort region Punta Cana (east).

I visited the store with a special pass and it is HUGE, much larger than the one in Atlanta, Georgia,
and the restaurant highest priced dish was salmon with vegetables at RD$200 pesos, a shrimp sandwich was RD$150 pesos.
The furniture was OK, but in a lot of items like beds and sofas I found the prices on the steep side, comparing to the prices for the same thing in the USA. Even if you compute 40% more for duty and ITBS, they where still much higher than Atlanta, as an example.
I read the same gripe about the Canary islands store, which is owned by the same franchisee.
The other thing is you better wear good walking shoes, and not be in a hurry, because you enter and then the exit takes you all over the store, before you can leave. LOL.

Oh yippy!

From a country known for good mahogany furniture to overpriced particle board garbage you can't even give away at garage sale to a blind person.

That’s modernity and progress!

well, i feel bad for those that make furniture in DR, But at least now you don't have to buy products in the U.S. and bring or send them to DR.
Hopefully they sell the products at a reasonable price.
Has anyone been to the Payless in the Zona Colonial ? Those Sob's Sell U.S.$40.00 sneakers for like double of what they are worth..

So, before anything in Ikea.. I got to see it b4 anything ..
And by the Way your PROUD ABOUT A IKEA DIQUE PALANTE PRESIDENTE ...

GENEROSO, after reading your statement I see that nothing will change and most likely Dominican Will prefer hand made furniture at a less expansive price.

Ikea is welcomed competition as long as they are not allowed free reign of the market. Local furniture makers now will have to compete on quality workmanship, reliability and practical design. Many Dominican Furniture makers are inefficient thieves who produce unreliable furniture with poor workmanship.

" The problem with IKEA is that everything needs to be ensemble by the buyer. That will cause some problems in the DR "

No infact its much better that way, because there slots of people that like that idea, its more reliable when for example your moving you just break ti down until small pieces and done! lots of space. well you won't like the idea unless your extremely lazy like josean and his haitians friends.

Wow the constant strain of trying to move your bowels has really weakened your wit. You know constipation is suspected as causal factor in Alzheimer’s.

You kind of remind me of that scene in the Sopranos where the mob boy Gigi goes in to the here after trying to squeeze one out!

Not that I wish that upon you of course because then who would I be able to shoot the caca with!

Furniture bought at Ikea is imported. Much furniture bouigh elsewhere is DR made. If people buy at Ikea jobs will be lost, not gained.

Its easy - you must be suffering from the fumes there in Santo Domingo. If you import something that used to be made in the DR jobs are lost. Even if only 30 % of the item are now imported jobs are still lost.
Your caviar still not arrived....
