Cabarete, Dominican Republic.- What happened to Camino Del Sol?

The question asked by Dominican Today collaborator Laura Vladimirova poses an entrepreneurial conundrum: a quick buck or the bankruptcy jinx.

The once luxurious enclave, until recently filled with European tourists is now desolate.

Hotels and condos have become dilapidated due to years of neglect, roads are littered with potholes, and watchmen have the nondescript job of guarding the empty community.

For some long-term residents, the peace that abandonment has brought is unmatched. For investors and locals looking to earn an income, the area remains eerily silent, but teeming with possibilities for deals.

Will Camino Del Sol ever return to its previous glory? Only the visionary with some pesos, dollars or euros to risk could venture an answer.

If tourism arrivals are at an all-time high, then why are these once-filled resorts empty?
