Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez assured that, notwithstanding other measures that the government will adopt to face the energy crisis, the subsidy for the sector will prevail, and will be dismounted as the service becomes more efficient.

“It is evident that the subsidy cannot disappear all of a sudden.  The elimination of the subsidy as well as improvement in the system is a process, whereby subsidies can be dismounted as technical losses and theft are also diminished,” stated Fernandez during the seminar on energy held over the weekend in Juan Dolio.

During this past Friday, International Monetary Fund mission chief in negotiations for the stand-by agreement with the Dominican Republic called on authorities to eliminate subsidies on energy and liquefied petroleum gas.

According to the Energy superintendent, among measures mulled by the government to face the crisis, is the extension of work hours in the distributors, so that collections can be improved.
