SANTO DOMINGO.- The head of the Senate’s Farm and Agribusiness Commission asked the Congress to reject a new tax on cigars, as it would “condemn the national tobacco industry."

Amílcar Romero (PLD-Duarte) said a new U.S. tax on cigars would cause losses of over US$100 million for the industry, in addition to the loss of jobs in one of the country’s poorest zones.

He said he stays in touch with ambassador in Washington, Flavio Darío Espinal, to lobby on the Dominican producers’ concern in the U.S. Senate.

The Cigar Producers Association (Procigar) stated their concern to Romero on the Dominican cigars’ future, if the new tax is approved. They said they cultivate in the country’s Cibao and Northwest regions close to 20,000 hectares, which can’t be used for any other type of crop.

Procigar said if approved it the legislative piece -an initiative of New York representative Charles Rangel- would be a hard blow for the cottage industry’s 25,000 direct jobs. "This would aggravate unemployment in the country, already affected from the reduction experienced by the free zones sector."

According to a source, tax on cigars is to partially fund the Children's Health Insurance a bill the US House passed Wednesday and the US Senate last night by a 68-31 vote, which protects it from a president George W. Bush veto, if he opts for that route.

The source said the current US tax on a cigar in is 5 cents per cigar, though would climb to 53% of the cigar’s value at the time it enters the US, with a maximum tax of $10.00 per cigar.

Why does the RD expect US Congress support to stop the cigar tax hike especially when the RD fails to cooperate with the US & the rest of the world?

The RD continues to allow corruption to be its main theme, a main partner in drug trafficking and corrupt judges, police etc. The same thugs (Pichardo brothers) are allow to sell illegal drugs, weapons within poor barrios of Santiago such as Los Platanitos (Ensanche Caonabo) while DNCD does nothing.

Call Rep Rangel to endorse the new tax!

The US has said that it wants to help Haiti. WHat it should do is remove the tax only if the Dominicans agree to bring part of their cigar industry to Haiti.

i have a different take on this one than does jd.now that the republicans have been put on the back bench in the house of representatives, the chickens have come home to roost.the dr supported george bush in the run-up to the iraq war.they even sent combatants to iraq.no other caribbean island took this stance.charlie rangel was infuriated by the treatment that the caricom nations recieved from the us,while the dr was enjoying their moment in the spotlight.now that charlie is in power, this

contd,
is payback time.secondly, the congressional black caucus,of which charlie is a powerful member, has been seething over the treatment that haitians recieve from the dominican government. they see it as an anti-black issue.now they can do something to force change.finally, the tacit acceptance of racism, such as the loft and other nightclub cases, summary deportation of haitians in contravention of the geneva convention,et al,makes the congressmen of conscience pretty furious.

besides, the president has reached out to just about everyone in the world with a few dollars of disposable income, but there has been no press release of entreaties to black businessmen or countries.the congressional black caucus has been ignored, whilst trump, maxim magazine and all other caucasian interests have been encouraged.now that charlie rangel is in the drivers seat,he is going to exact his revenge.politics is a big boys game,my friends.watch for further instalments.

The cigar tax is a blow to what little exports are derived from the DR., and futher emphasize the self-centered and pointed targets of Rep Rangel, NY. He would not sponsor this legislation if his buddy Cuban Fidel had the ability to export to the USA directly, so he uses this as a double edged sword to swipe at the Dominicans for having to deal with the Haitian invasion and its economic socio/political issues which Bill Clinton left behind.
Bordering on soverign failure, the DR will fall.

you are right ,to a certain degree, alberto.you, however, have to realise that politics is an adult pastime.there are consequences to all actions. if the dr government chooses to support us republicans, ignore injustice aimed at black folks, invite only caucasians to do business here, then maybe, just maybe, black folks in the democratic party will get a little angry.
