SANTO DOMINGO.- Haiti was Dominican Republic’s third most important export market in 2006, with US$147.19 million in exports, an 18.80% growth compared with US$123.89 million in 2005.

A Dominican Republic Exports and Investments Center report says for the first time overall exports exceeded US$1.53 billion in 2006, compared with the previous year, with US$1.08 billion in exports.

Exports to Haiti with the highest values are steel rods and wheat flour, US$13.67 million and US$12.66 million, respectively. Also eggs, with US$8.65 million, gray cement with US$8.52 million and corrugated cardboard boxes with US$4.21 million.

I have said it before & will say it again.

If we worked together we would OUTPERFORM Asia in export growth. With cheap Haitian labor (Dominicans too), RD infrastructure & American know-how this combination could get products to the big US/Canadian markets cheaper, better and faster than from Asia (on the other side of the world).

China has several export problems and is more vulnerable now but the RD leadership is too weak to take advantage of this opportunities.

But how much is that costing the DR? Many poor dominicans do not have jobs, due to masive amont of illigal haitian workers is our country. And that's just one on the list of problems DR gets from Haiti. Plus this numbers are questinable, there are groups interested in showing Haiti, as more important than it really is.
