The Dominican Republic is highly dependent on the U.S. economy.
Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO.- The threat of recession which according to international organisms and analysts affects the United States economy also endangers Dominican finances.

Dominican trade and balances of payment’s great dependency on the U.S. economy implies a potentially high risk, in the event financial upheavals materialize, sparked by the impact of rising oil prices, in real estate and the financial crisis of defaulted mortgage payments.

The Dominican economy’s most dynamic sectors, such as tourism, remittances and the free zones, have a link as high as more than 80 percent with the United States. As services, they are highly vulnerability in times of reduced spending, one of the direct consequences in a recession.

A fourth sector, which could also bee affected and has great impact on the balance of payments and internally to generate exports, is that of foreign investment. Though somewhat cyclical, the United States is the main provider of foreign capital, in free zones as well as directly.

As the expression that “if the U.S. economy sneezes Dominican catches a cold,” recession or deceleration can affect Dominican Republic, at least in the flow of remittances from relatives abroad, the country’s second largest source of currency. According to the Inter-American Development Bank (I.D.B.) the country receives 77 percent of remittances from the U.S.

In 2007 Dominicans received US$2.99 billon from relatives abroad, a relative increase of 9 percent compared with the previous year.

"In 2007 Dominicans received US$2.99 billon from relatives abroad, a relative increase of 9 percent compared with the previous year. "

We are sending more money not because we are more generous (at least in my case) but because it takes more money for our families to live in Lio-nel Fernandez's METROLANDIA.

Josean:

You're constant sniping at Leonel and the PLD make me think that you have a very strong "agenda". Why not come out and tell us exactly who and what you support as opposed to hiding behind your insults?

Juan,
I feel the same way as she does and NO I am not in favor of the Metro to help a few people and the cost born by the masses. They took money from Education which there was terribly little there to begin with and put it in the Metro which I think is an outright SIN. I also think they are a greedy bunch and will probably vote for someone without a chance of winning before I would vote for Leonel.

I would be interested to hear YOUR feelings instead of challanging someone elses.

I KNOW the metro is bad for the DR
The DR is unable to cover the cost of repair/service/maintenance, 24/7 electricity for the drainagepumps and the electricity system, without using(stealing) this money from other funds like education and medical.
Still do you really think that people who NEED to cross the capital can use the metro, or those who have no intention to go in the same direction as the metro goes wil try to do some "station-hopping" just to please the goverment and use the metro while there are shorter way's to their destiny.

There is only a small group who will use the metro as transportation, and a much larger group who see it as a nice source of additional power and income, but who will never use the metro by themselves becuase they have already enough transportation methods ...

and than there is the big chance of flooding and earthquakes ... will this be an alternative russian roulette ??

no pre surveys - poor construction methods / materials. Like the autopista [ which is falling down]but underground. And who is the metro for - not anyone I know. Oh yes let us remember that LF and Pena airport. Like the Pyramids; useless! This pld is a total disaster.

Antonio,
Is it good to take money from Education to build it?

Don't you think it will be a bit unsafe when no studies were done and they just dove into it?

Have you no quarms about Earthquakes and Hurricanes?

Do you think this is the best use of the money dollar for dollar return for this country at this time?

Oye, I could go on and on but enough said till you respond.

For the record:

I do not support the metro. The use of funds that should have been spent for education is a disgrace, as is the lack of pursuit of corruption and the goal of achieving a governmental position for personal gain. However, considering what happened in the previous 4 years, and what other choices are out there, I think that we should stick with the best possible option, in other words take the best of all the bad options and stick with Leonel.

YES I think this government knows what it is doing! They are creating a new vehicle to steal money from the people!

How can anyone be so nieve when they know the truth.

I think the Metro is a disaster waiting for a place to happen. You just ignore any reasoning whatsoever and defend this disaster and when it comes will probably blame it on someone else.

"Denial" btw is not a river in Egypt for heavens sake!

Positive things about this goverment ... oh yes there are a few

Finally there are enough buildings for rent in the Zona Franca and cheap (where did all those companies go ?)
Labor is also cheap, the people want to work almost for nothing, it seems they are hungry.
But only those taxes over taxes and triple ITBIS are a killer.

But lets look at the sunny side, at least last weekend we could get a room (and cheap) in a hotel in Puerto Plata without a reservation, it is just that there is nobody there, enough empty space

And those closing times at 12 is also very good, so we had to go to bed early, what is very good for the health.

It is just a bit of a problem for my neighbour, with her 6 kids, who lost her job because of those early closings and now has to do "other" things to feed her kids, but she looks still young and good, so she will have some luck.

I cannot find anything negative in all this .. do you ???

Listen the Haitians did a better job running this country than any Dominican. Laws, titles for property, law and order. Look at Duarte; first thing he did was reinstitute SLAVERY.

More positive effects from this goverment:

With the big holes in the Santo Domingo Elevador the carshops do extra business selling Tires and Shock absorbers
And when the first metro will tremble underground making the elevador to collapse, we will have new fresh building space and created room for extra labor.
And we do something about the air pollution as well, now that there are landing less tourist airplanes, in the D.R. polluting the skies above our beautiful country

Never loose the positive view(few) on this goverment, they have really fresh and positive ideas

It is clear that bending words and sentences, you can always get something positive

... Lawyers are specialized is this ...

The common public calls this sometimes: Ly-On-L (awyer)

It is just what point of view you use or on what side you are on !
