The 40-story Caney tower.

Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO.- Luxury, comfort and modernity characterize the buildings along the Dominican capital’s exclusive Anacaona avenue, where cost as much as US$2 million (RD$67 million) for lots of up to 800 square meters makes them affordable only to the high class and some foreigners.

In this exclusive area of the city, boasting a view of the sea and along the Mirador park, tall buildings averagnig 26 floors are prevalent, and the highest, the 40-story Caney tower, located between the Bobea and Núnez de Cáceres streets, will be finished by the end of this year. The builder is Rodriguez Sandoval & Asociados.

The new buildings’ success in condo sales and the demand for that type of project has spurred investors to continue on the skyscraper route, with the next one set to rise 62 floors, by the same builder.

El Caney has 31, 853 square meter penthouses, one per floor; first it begins in the fourth floor, with a view of the Caribbean. The 150 meter tall structure is slated for occupation at the end of this year.

Along the Anacaona the new buildings often feature heliports and swimming pools on the roof, and the developers boast anti-earthquake and anti-hurricane construction, with windows that resist winds of 250 kilometers per hour.

Hey as long as I get Electricity 24/7 for life, a clean pool everyday of the year for life, and 2 means of egress from every floor, and all exit stairs leading to the street level are properly lit when the emergency back up power kicks in, I could see myself investing on a 42nd floor unit. If I can't get public safety, than I would rather stay at ground level and buy a House period.

Also is the Fire Dept in DR capable of handling a real Hi Rise Fire in a Emergency? I haven't heard any comments on that topic.

I understand the views $$$$ are nice, but I would be a lot nicer to use the Stairs than have to jump out a window during a emergency situation.

and if the price is astronomical, why not buy a home instead?
lets keep in mind why some of us are tired of NY.
Overcrowded transportation, lack of housing, the garbage problem, overcrowded apts.

Funny how the first thought that came to mind was related to the ability of the public emergency services to respond to an actual emergency in a high-rise building like this. From what I know, from the training (or lack thereof depending how you want to look at it) that the fire department, EMS or the Police Department gets in DR, your safety better lies in your own hands by staying at ground level. I would NOT trust my life in the hands of three completely incompetent institutions - sorry!

To Jander: Why all animosity against Dominicans BUDDY, so now I get the big picture.
It's OK for Haitians to feel discriminated and abused at anytime but it's never OK
for a Dominican to feel discriminated.

See what I always say "RACISM" is a 2 ways street SIR, in Haiti white and light skin
people are prosecuted and discriminated by dark skin people, isn't this RACISM too.

With all due respect and like I always say "EDUCATION, EDUCATION and CIVILIZATION"
Mr. Jander, so please let me say something patriotic on behalf of Dominican Republic
"Dios, Patria y Libertad"

By the way today is Juan Pablo Duarte's Day......................

hi Edward: love your stuff. you never cease to entertain. Santo Domingo will surpass San Juan by 2020. really? in what respect, pray tell? you think 40 story buildings mean advancement? have you ever seen a skyscraper fire? people who post in this column drawing parallels with new york are so clueless it amazes me. have you ever seen how many emergency units respond to a fire in a low rise building in new york? and have you seen the response time? and still, with all the assets and manpower, trained to the highest degree, sometimes several lives are lost. so can you imagine the BOMBEROS of santo domingo temporarily suspending the domino game to fight a fire on the 36th floor? sorry; i will remain in the mezzanine, thank you very much!

Dreadlocks, you can question the bomberos competence but you can't question that this is a sign of progress, financial stability, and investor confidence. It takes these factors to develop these million dollar properties. Future looks bright if we continue this financial stability and remember to spread the to poor by providing opportunies through education and social programs. Everyone has to benefit from the DR boom. Eh pa'lante que vamos!

We are not in any way better than Haitian population, not are they better than us.
Nor the USA population is better or worst than us. We all have problems and we have to deal with them somehow. Your comments are just the way of thinking of a lot of people in our island. For example if in one instance Haiti was more productive than the Dominican Rep. we would all be moving and learning French and creole but it happens to be the other way and some of us don't like the Haitians or their culture in our backyard.

In relation to the Skyscrapers they are of great benefit to the rich but it also means some sort of employment for people.

i agree with moses2028: more multimillion dollar condos will give rise to more jobs; just think of all the maids, dishwashers and gardeners, not to mention the window washers. ah, progress!! now if only some of the servants could read the sign that says "keep off the grass"

That is true about the city.

and the majority lives in the suburbs, in Chicago there are not many and we are organized into any groups. I like the situation with us because where there are too many like New York or Boston. You will always see the good things and the bad things. But in Chicago we are seen as a wave of very educated Dominican Immigrants.

Santo Domingo already rates 30th in North American cities (Including Central America) and 67th in the world in high rise buildings. When it comes to highest structures, by the time Torre Anacaona is complete, only Panama in Latin America will have a higher structure. You may not notice it because the buildings are not as centralized in a downtown area as we see in the US, but as more get built more centralized it will look.

NYCDR,

Do your research, Chicago has the highest percentage of MBA's aka Professionals. I know there are less out there but they are better prepared. Chicago, is a hot-bed for educated Dominicans.
I'm glad we are spreading across the U.S. in a good way.
