SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Government is scheduled formally sign an economic association agreement  with the European Union today, making the country Latin America’s leader, after Chile, with the most Free Trade deals, now with 48 nations.

Defining it as a historic day for the Dominican Republic, Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales said the signing of the new trade treaty that includes 27 European countries, will significantly expand the diversification of the nation’s exports, which also benefits local producers and free zones.

The official, who’ll represent the Dominican government in the event, said the agreement will be signed today in the Caribbean island Barbados, and private sector leaders were invited to the ceremony.

Morales noted that Congress must approve the pact, “because we need to have that agreement approved by the lawmakers and signed by the President no later than October 31."

not even close.
Singapore has a Transparent Government. Low Corruption and pro-business laws.

Not to mention Singapore is situated in one of the World's most important trade routes. Pretty much everything shipped from Asia to Europe, Africa and the Middle East passes by Singapore.

Agreement with Haiti?

Dominican Ambassador in Haiti Jose Serulle says that there is no better time than the present for the DR to sign a trade agreement with Haiti. He added that both governments are feeling the urgency. Serulle favors a broad-based agreement that is fair and helps strengthen relations between both nations. According to Serulle, both the DR and Haiti represent an important market and an agreement would only facilitate inter-country trade. Officials from both countries have consistently spoken of the need for an agreement, yet neither side has made any concrete moves to start the process.

With all these free trade deals the DR must be one of the richest nations in the world.
Or is it just a free holiday in exotic places for the directors to sign.

Hola guys, a lot of scepticism I hear. Is that a trade? I do fear that trade deals are not so special anymore nowadays, should we wonder why there hasn't been one with the EU sooner? Anyway, let's be happy that there will be one soon; many small steps make big progress.

I would say that turning a country around is not an easy job. Whoever is part of the government, it would be a miracle workers job to do it in a couple of years.

And look how good a country like the USA is in making a mess of things.
Mind you, it has only a 110V electricity system, how primitive.
It has no schooling system with consistent quality at all levels for everyone.
It has no medical care for everyone.
It has no social security system for everyone.
It has no proper trans USA railroad system.
Democratic? Who has the most money to hire the best spin doctors, mass psychologists and run the largest campaign wins; mass manipulation.
Call that a first world country?
LOL

anthonyc, socialised health care has its problems. but it sure beats having no health care at all. it is easy for people who have health care to decry the system in Canada, but 49 million Americans wish they had something that bad.

that, GC, is the issue. i noticed where you use the qualifier "who can afford it". those in canada who cannot afford it wait two years. in america, they wait forever. you tear a ligament in your knee in the states, that is it. in canada, even if you wait, you can get it repaired. that is the difference. and do not give me crap about the emergency room; they do not treat injuries like that in the emergency room.

Mr. C, please think (and read) more before making such ignorant remarks. If it weren't for the Netherlands and their stubborn opposition against catholic-spaniard bigotry during their eighty year war of independence (1567-1647), Spain would still be the dominant power on this world and not your beloved US.

For being such a defender of capitalism, he's showing a great deal of irreverence, insulting the first maritime empire of the capitalist age, and which, with the Bank of Amsterdam, set the model in which the future British Empire (with its Bank of England) would further the system's future conquests, against the universal monarchy model represented by the catholic countries such as Spain and its successor in bigotry, Royal France. Every free trade economist knows this by heart.

I've read that some "human rights" organizations and other socialist nuts are protesting in the streets because the DR signed this trade deal with the EU....I almost forgot to mention that the ones protesting are haitians in Haiti. Their country didn't sign the deal, but they are angry because the DR did.

I seem to have triggered some interesting further conversation.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, Peter Stuyvesant who founded New York was Dutch, the place used to be called New Amsterdam.

AnthonyC, are you from RD? If you talk about NL like this, than you probably have not much appreciation for RD either. It happens to be only 50% larger than NL and it is an Island.

By the way, I was told off by Russians some years ago that the Dutch medical system is rubbish, compared to the Russian one. From what they told me, I could follow their reasoning.

Cuidate
