Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez last night designated former Major Leaguers Juan Marichal and Sammy Sosa, special ambassadors for the Promotion of Foreign Investment.

Marichal is a member of the United States baseball Hall of Fame, whereas Sosa, who has yet to announce his retirement, is the Latino player with the most home runs, with 609.

GC:

Your choice. Would you rather play against a guy that cheats by corking his bat, and thereby getting hits and home runs that he doesn't deserve, or would you rather play against a guy who assaults you by repeatedly hitting you over the head with a bat, possibly gravely injuring or maybe even killing you?
Like I said, its your choice.

If Juan Marichal was playing right now he would be worth 25 million a year

So?
Still doesn't change the fact that he was an A-Hole.

In an August 22, 1965 game between the bitter west coast rivals, after two of his Dodger teammates had been plunked by Giants pitcher Juan Marichal, Johnny Roseboro signalled for Sandy Koufax to drill Marichal.

"Koufax was constitutionally incapable of throwing at anyone's head, so I decided to take matters into my own hands," wrote Roseboro in his autobiography.

What Roseboro did was whip his return throw past Marichal's ear. This infuriated Marichal, who proceeded to use his bat to open a gash in Roseboro's head. Both benches emptied and Marichal was ordered from the game. Roseboro was carried off the field and needed 14 stitches to close the wound in his head.

Unfortunately, the terrifying event was chronicled in great detail by photographers, and the image of Marichal raising his bat over his head to deliver a blow to Roseboro was carried in practically every newspaper in the nation and re-printed in Life magazine.

Marichal was suspended for eight games and fined $1,750 by Major League Baseball. But most damaging to his character, the "Dominican Dandy" was condemned by many in the media. Roseboro, who missed just two games with his head injury (which required 14 stitches), eventually filed a lawsuit, seeking more than $100,000 in damages. Ultimately, Roseboro and Marichal settled, and Juan paid the catcher $7,000.

lways the gentleman, Roseboro accepted his responsibility for the fight.

"I provoked it," Roseboro would recall, "I threw that ball too close to Juan's ear."

In later years, the two men reconciled and became close friends. When Marichal missed making the Hall of Fame by a few votes one year, Roseboro came to his defense and worried that the incident would unfairly taint the pitcher's legacy. When Roseboro died, Marichal spoke at his funeral.

yumnuk very interestingly the incident you talk about I vividly remember ...it took place at the same moment two incidents that affected Roseboro and Marichal were unfolding ..first Roseboro from Los Angeles watts which at that moment was on fire from the horrible race riots and at the same time Marichal whose beloved island Dominican Republic was being more or less invaded by US forces.......It is safe to say their minds may not have been totally focused on the game called baseball

Attacking a competitor with a bat makes him an A-Hole.

BTW.
A standard line is that every player is loved by their teammates. Rarely do they say they don't. that is why it makes headlines when it does.

Im sure nobody in here was playing with the Cubs or working at Wrigley field when this happened. So nobody really knows if it was a human mistake or he intentionally did it...lets respect him. (this is not in defense of Sosa, im just saying)

And if Marichal was a a mean guy...then make sure none of you guys become his friend.

anyways....both these guys could by all you people's right to talk. FILTHY RICH. lol

anthonyC: "Yankees don't count. They are on a higher level than the rest of the league".

That's why they have been consistently losing the season on the last few years, cuz' they haven't learned the lesson that money can't buy everything, specially the teamwork needed to win a World Series.

I mean, seriously, to what reason do you adscribe the Devil Rays and the Phillies making it to the World Series?

Now pay attention.
The Phillies and the Rays won more games than any team in their respective divisons.

In the 1st round of the Playooffs both teams won their series.

Then the Rays and Phillies both won their League Championship Series.

Now the Phillies and Rays are playing a besst of seven series called the "World Series"

Whichever team wins 4 game first is crowned champion.

My point, anthonyC, is that you can´t just buy your way to a World Series, as it has been Steinbrenner´s belief on recent years. A team needs more than just grossly overpayed "superstars" to make it, you know.

Since Steinbrener purchased the Yankees name one team that has been more successful.

Lautaro another example of your whining philosophy....George can do whatever he wants with his money ...Sorry you and the other socialist weanies dont like it....but George is one of the greatest Yankees of all time .....when tonyc said "Yankees don't count. They are on a higher level than the rest of the league " ....It is because of George fighting to maintain that Yankee tradition with his hard earned money.....and it was smart business

Excuse me if I find your excuses for not winning a World Series for almost an entire decade to be nothing more than self serving bs. Oddly enough, the Yankees haven't won a series under the current Republican administration, could this be a coincidence?
