Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic started shipping sugar to the European Union under a
new economic partnership that officials say could eventually triple the
country's sugar exports.
The
first shipment of 12,000 tons of brown sugar has been sent to France
and a second shipment of 20,000 tons of sugar destined for several
European countries will arrive in November, said Faustino Jimenez, director
of the National Sugar Institute.

Alright!
It's high time we started diversifying our export partners. Why stop with sugar. We should be exporting anything and everything to the EU--as well as encouraging direct investment from their member countries...

Thank god!
Its about time we start to cut on our economic dependency with the U.S.
it might not be safe to depend on them in the long run, look how they have screwed things in the economy lately.

Price per pound?
At current rates of exchange between the euro and the US dollar [5] the post reform EU sugar price (€335 per tonne) will yield a price of 22.39 c/lb. This compares to a world market future price in December 2007 of 10.12 c/lb. This represents a price differential between EU and world market prices of 12.27 c/lb [6], around twice the world market price of sugar.
This is part of a quota system for LDC's.
http://agritrade.cta.int/en/Commodities/Sugar-sector/Executive-briefIt takes approx 4 lbs of sugar in the form of cane to produce 1 litre of ethanol. At World prices this equates to about 1.6 dollars a gallon. Ethanol production should start in the next year or so in the DR - this would seem to a preferable use for cane above exporting sugar at World prices. However inputs ( feritlzer etc. ) have to be factored in.

I would like to help with shipping & logistics. I work for an international logistics company and can offer excellent pricing. Does anyone know how to get in touch with these companies and who to talk to? I used to live in San Pedro de Macoris and would love to work there.
