SANTO DOMINGO.- The Customs Agency (DGA) yesterday said the import of vehicles with the steering wheel on the right is banned, since it poses a transit security risk.
General Norm No.2-08 issued yesterday gives notice that "all imported motor vehicles that have the steering wheel installed on the right side will be confiscated” once the measure takes effect.
In that regard the DGA issued a 30 day deadline as of yesterday to dispatch all autos of that type, "that will be in ports or that can be confirmed are aboard the ships that transport them towards the ports."
The norm establishes that in the cases of the units that will be on ships or that have been properly declared for transport to the country, the consignatary will have to prove, by means of certification by the shipping company and an original of the Boarding Manifest, that the date of the Bill of Llading is prior to the norm’s publication.

automobiles are designed according to the roads that they might transit.
So a car designed with right hand drive is designed to transit in the "wrong" side of the street if you are used to left hand drive and can be dangerous to pedestrians and passengers.
So they should have never been allowed in the country period.
There is an outfit in Zona Franca in San pedro de Macoris that brings used cars from right hand drive countries (like Japan) and converts them to left hand drive.
I guess that was too much trouble and expense to do that.
It's all Belial's fault.
