SANTO DOMINGO.- Retail mogul Jose Luis Corripio (Pepin) today urged Dominican businesses not to lay employees off despite the crisis that affects the country, because in his view the companies are like a family, that don’t have to go their separate ways from conjunctural situations.

He said firings shouldn’t be to course to follow at this time by Dominican industrialists, since the worker constitutes the company’s human capital and nothing can be done without them. He said a company is like a family, formed by capital and work, and like in all families, when there are better times and worse times, must stay united.

Corripio, when asked about Interior and Police minister Franklin Almeyda’s statement that massive layoffs in companies is what brings insecurity to the population, said that no industralist, regardless of how much money they have, can do anything if they don’t handle their human capital efficiently.

He said the Corripio Group has more than 9,000 employees and despite the crisis none have been laid off. “We’re not going to do it either, because we feel that we’re in the same boat as many of the owners as the senior officials and the employees at the lowest level.”

He said business leaders together with employees must bear the stormy crises together, as they also did so in the good times.

Easy for you to say that Mr. Pepin Corripio, as you are one of, if not the wealthiest men in the DR. It would be easier and more meaningful to ask your President Mr LF, along with his cronies not to steal so much in the next 6 months. That way maybe, just maybe we can all get through this mess. If I opearte a Hotel and bookings are off 50%, I certainly cannot employ the same staff for more that 60 days, without a RIF (reduction in Force). My pockets are not that deep!

Pepin Corripio is a positive model of what hard work, savings and full dedication to his business can accomplish.
He is a living example of somebody who rose from nothing and became an important and influential
business figure that all serious Dominican businessmen look up to.

Which fool was 'shouting' a month ago that the DR was NOT going to be affected by the world economy?

Fire that idiot. Actually if he had any integrity he would quit, but that's a stretch for any Dominican.

This is a great concept but unfortunately not reality.

Kudos's for employing 9000 people that is commedable.

The problem here is there isn't any unemployemt insurance something I think this country should seriously consider.

When he says "none have been laid off" well that just tells me it less expensive for him to keep them working then to pay them severance. This is smart business.

Nontheless it is very difficult to let employees go around the holidays.

Lets see what happens after the holidays..

Somehow Dominican and integrity even used in the same sentence is scary.

These fine gentlemen in our government are still trying to make ends meet in their Swiss Accounts. In the US kids look to escape the Ghetto by becoming a professional athelete. Here they want to become a polititian.

Truly an amazing "CHRISTIAN" Country! Another oxymoron

Yes, this is good everyone should have lifetime jobs. In Japan Mitusbishi workers had this. They had Mitsubishi, bars, houses, drove Mitsubishi cars, used Mitsubishi bank, went to Mitsubishi hotels on holiday, children went to Mitcsubishi schoos and farms suppying food were owned by Mitsubishi. Of course they were dedicated and worked long hours for Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi exported to buy raw materials, coal, iron ore, oil etc. but producuced nearly everything else needed by the family itself. Workers had big sharehoding in Mitsubishi so they had good penisons.
If DR gave everyone lifetime employment and nationalised the farms this would be great. Truly an economic miracle. Of course the DR could follow the lead of other governments and buy into all banks and businesses as long as they kept employing people.
