San Salvador.– Officials from the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic  held the first meeting of the Labor Affairs Council established under the Dominican Republic–Central America–United States Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).

The council is responsible for overseeing the implementation of, and for reviewing progress under, the Labor Chapter of the DR-CAFTA, including the activities of the Labor Cooperation and Capacity Building Mechanism established under the Labor Chapter.

The council reaffirmed the importance of each party fulfilling its commitments under the Labor Chapter, including the effective enforcement of each party’s labor laws and respect for the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

"We see the DR-CAFTA countries as crucial partners on labor matters in the hemispheric dialogue. We are all equal partners in the free trade agreement, and share a foundation of common interests and goals. Labor cooperation is an important part of our regional trade relationship,” said Howard M. Radzely, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor.

whatever that is to be said about these treaties now is not the time to consider doing away with them ...the world economy says more cooperation in trade and economics at this time

you are correct, GC. anyone who doubts you need look no further than the devastating effects that the ill-conceived Smoot Hawley protectionist tariffs had on the world economy during the great depression. all protectionism serves to accomplish is retaliatiatory tariffs. the issue in this posting appears to be one of labor agreements and standards; who knows what is the intent. a living wage, perhaps?

I am still waiting for the U.S. Congress to eliminate subzidies to their farming sector! Let us compete against those vagabonds in Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, etc. But for the moment, I ask Dominicans to be loyal to Dominican products for consumption and lifestyle (forget Pizza, Burgers, and other processed foods from up north)!

Don't let foreign values and unfair (subzidies) products destroy our internal market and methods of productions! Once we loose our way of producing what we need, we'll become a Haiti (100% dependent on the outside!)

greenwave, would you care to elaborate on which products the "vagabonds" from the states you name are subject to subsidies? having done that, can you indicate your reasons why you think we can produce them more inexpensively if the subsidies are eliminated?
