Santo Domingo.- The arrival of international tourists to Dominican Republic fell 11%, from 234,709 in October last year to 209,616 the same month this year, said the nongovernment organization Quisqueya Foundation, which affirms that the decline should “seriously concern” the Dominican tourism industry.

The economists Frank Valenzuela and Héctor Frias, the organization’s president and executive director, quote the World Tourism Organization’s “International tourism panorama in 2008” report, which notes that international tourists who’ve visited the country constitute nonresident foreigners, plus Dominican residing abroad.

In that regard they note the Dominican Central Bank’s monthly figures show foreign tourist arrivals fell 19,211 in October, from 196,283 in 2007 to 177,072 this year.

As far as Dominicans who reside abroad, their arrivals fell by 5,877, from 38,421 in October, 2007 to 32,544 this year, or 9.8 percent less.

They affirm that while total international tourists arrivals had a positive absolute growth of 42,163 and a 1.3 percent growth rate from January to October, the figure should seriously concern in the sector, when compared with the arrivals for those same periods of 257,437 in 2006, the 207,102 in 2005 and the 427,304 in 2003, when growth rates fell 8.5, 7.3 and 18 percent respectively.

They added that the last edition of the World Tourism Organization’s Barometer, “confirms international tourism’s fast decelerated growth from mid 2008 as a result  of the increase in oil prices at the start of the year,  the deterioration  the economic situation and the loss of confidence by consumers in the last few months that constricted travel budgets.”

Now that we had a US election with likely to be the most intelligent US President we have ever had (despite him being black which "should be" irrelevant)...maybe we can open up Cuba travel and even go further with a US boycott against the RD. This boycott should go on while we encourage the RD Gov and its officials to get out of the DRUG GAME!

When the RD economy is ruined, all of a sudden leaders like Prez LF will "SEE THE LIGHT" and instead of him criticizing the US free market system he will instead "focus, fight & execute" against RD Gov corruption at home. Thereby Prez LF can be a true friend to his greatest ally - the US Gov and American people.

I hope the RD tourism falls further and faster!

The RD practices "psuedo democracy" whereas the US just has the greatest expression of democracy that once again for the 1st time in many years ...had the whole world watching the US again with admiration.

Let the US return to its Glory days once again!

P.S. Get rid of Fann

JD I don’t agree with that, the U.S. to me never has had "Glory Days". Just people that where saying the good and not the bad they did.

A fall in Tourism will hurt more the average Dominican then the government or the resort owners. You know that LF will cater to the resort owners more then the Dominican public.

The Dominican government needs also to really crack down on crimes.
It has been reported that many tourists have been attacked and even killed.
Those who seek to tarnish the image of this beautiful country and this beautiful people should be put out of business for good

I think that is very sad, that tourist visiting DR most of the time can't and won't leave their resorts to see all of the beauty DR posses. Is funny, how no one talks about the assault on foreigners which includes robbery, sexual assualt, deaths, and the Dreaded Sanky Pankys! And how about cleaning the cities just a little so people can see that although an economically poor country, we are a friendly, clean and inviting people! Look at Jamaica for instance; they maintain their cities as nice and clean as their resorts areas... That's because they realize that without tourism, they might as well be nothing. What's it going to take for our government to improve and make DR a tourist friendly place? How about pulling their heads out of their behind and hiring non corrupted authorities to do their jobs? After all, "La limpiesa comiensa en su casa" Right?

Dominicanlady,thanks for venturing that far.
I was afraid to say it myself.
Tourism is about absorbing another culture .It is not about resorts, buffets, sea sport, beaches because one could go to Florida for this.
Tourism is being able to inteact with beautiful people,go to their museums, walk their streets, try their language and see them smile and help you.
Tourism is about seeing the common people, experience their humility the way treat their senior parents and return home having learned that money is not everything.
Tourism is escaping the rat race here at work, the worries of credit card bills piling up, the nasty calls from collection agency and see how people can be happy with less money.
See how people can sing, dance ,laugh.and share their food with their neighbours.
I have been fortunate to experience all this, being able to get up in the morning going to the malecon play a party of domino.

TFISKE, you incoherent, intoxicated buffoon, will you try to stay on topic? i realise that you are not functioning with a full deck, and you seem to be skipping your medication lately. but, this is not that difficult. the concern in the article is for declining tourist arrival figures in THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. get it, you rhesus monkey? how does a peddlar or weed seller in jamaica affect that condition? what does NEW ORLEANS have to do with anything? here's an idea; before you post, try to wait a few days to let the drugs clear themselves from your system. you do not have much of an IQ to start with, but, with a clear head (i did not say brain), you might actually surprise us all and make a semi-intelligent remark. you should never be allowed to travel outside of canada, until science has established whether or not your condition of idiocy is contagious. you could end up,dumbing down entire populations.

I think the argument can be made that the DR is less expensive than other destinations. That you can get more bang for your buck by going to Punta Cana/Bayahibe/Puerto Plata instead of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and New Orleans. In times of economic crisis you want to stretch the money and a U.S $1.00 can go a long way in the DR...

the argument can also be made that tourism in the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos caters to two different income groups. though there are high dollar resorts in the DR, it is mainly configured to focus on middle and lower middle income clientele. the average tourist in the DR stays for 10 days, and spends 99 dollars per day. the cayman and turks visitor stays 5 days, and spends 329 dollars per day. the argument can be made that the lower income categories may very well be the first to stop travelling, because they have less discretionary income.

Dreadlocks, I new I would need to explain this to you! I use to go to New Orleans with groups and it was great but then the goverment forgot about them(hurricane). They are still paying for it companies and tourism is down. I am far from racist but dislike lazy dumb asses like you .
You read a book about the place but never go out of fear. I have been in the Tourist Industry for 15 years and you no jack. Cayman has had several hurricane problems, its expensive and numbers are much lower. Jamaica well its making a comeback of sort and has had similar problems like PR is having. Asia has been the place for business and yes the USA is more attractive. When companies have less money they stay home and spend less!
You have no clue we hire bands from New Orleans to play parties!

maybe, GC, they crunched the numbers and found that with predicted downturn for the next two years, there will be probably overcapacity in this segement of the market in the caribbean for the next two years, leading to excess capacity here. i was doing some research on hotels in the caribbean, and you must remember that other islands also have tremendous 5 star resorts , which have been in place for decades. the Ritz Carlton and Grand Lido have been operating in Jamaica for many years, not to mention Frenchman's Cove, which, in the 1950s, was the most expensive and luxurious hotel in the world; it is where people like HRH prince Philip went to hob nob with the Arab Royalty, buzzing around in the helicopters provided by the hotel. then there are the hotels in Bermuda, and other islands, which are tres chic. so, maybe they set back construction until the market picks up again. you cannot stay in business with these plants by having Thomas Cook fill them with $500 per week packages.

Hi Dreadlocks.I have posted a comment if you back to November 24th.
My main concern is crime and I trust that the governement will do more to stop it and put the criminals aou of business.
When a country depends an tourism, its govenement should do more to make the the visitors feel safe.
Another concern, the governement should also accomodate those who want to visit the Dominican Republic to learn about its culture and to immerse themselves in the Spanish language.
Now people do not go to a foreign country not just to be isolated and quarantained in resorts
They want to circulate freely and safely in order to be able to interact with the locals.

Now I have Dominican friends and I have met the most beautiful woman who is part of my life.
I go to the cock fights,I hang up at colmados. My spanish have improved a lot. I go to the campos to collect avocadoes.grapefruits, and what have you.
I bathe in rivers, listen to old folks narrating the history of the country.

US and other countries should raise paid holidays to above the standard of the French ( typically 8 weeks a year) and introduce retirement at 55 with pay. This would increase number of tourists.
Unversities and colleges should increase 'spring break' to at least 4 weeks. This would enable students to take advantave of cheap rates at this time of year.
Airlines need to rush to introduce A380 as this is more economical. Competitor Thai airways orders this.
Government should press other countries to provdie work visas for DR people displaced by drop in visas. Spain has already assisted in this respect.

The new efficient Chinese jet could make flights cheaper to Puerto Rico and other destinations such as Caracus

Interestingly it has rear mounted engines like the old Caravelle and this could make flying in a small jet quieter.

TFISKE, i am sure New York did not enjoy you. thankfully, you do not seem to like the place. stay away, and do us all a favor . nobody wants you there. we already have enough derelicts and mental patients, as it is. the place is crawling with undesirables, pedophiles, and other miscellaneous bums. give us a break, and do not add to the misery. stay in the timberlands and tundra with your beasts. we appreciate your absence, thank you.
