Santo Domingo.- The Transport Reform Office (Opret) is still on track with the programmed activities for the Santo Domingo Metro’s start of operations in December.

The regulatory entity’s personnel works in the high and low tensions lines, the control centers and electrical substations, said Opret assistant director Leonel Carrasco. "Collaterally we are connecting all software units and the gigantic salon, called the main control."

Carrasco said 260 Santo Domingo State University (UASD) students have been trained to work in that department who also received training as train conductors and how to deal with people in the operational area.

The official said Opret advances to meet the programs and agreed procedures, which must be validated by several companies contracted for that purpose, including Cimex, the Tos Sin, Tales and Alstom, which supervise the electromechanical and rails systems and the rolling stock. "These people should give us a certification in the next few days, as soon as we conduct the pertinent tests."

hey josean where are you we want you to be in the photo caption when the metro is inaugurated finally and you will be riding in the first wagons.
You will get a free monthly pass for all of your dedication and subliminal cyber help in getting this project completed.
Don't be like Richard Nixon when speaking to the press said:
You won't have me to kick around any more!
josean we really miss you, come back!

Duh – just great – of course there will be 8,000,000 riders a day when you include NYC rider ship and where Lie-onelly will be touted as the current Pharaoh. Unless you take into account that useless monster light bulb.

Hopefully the metro power stations are working as well in December, the national grid does not have the capacity right now to supply the electricity needed...

Taking into consideration all that been said, and respecting everyone’s opinion on this Subject I think it’s kind of nice to have a urban train like this. I personally can’t wait to get on it, and I’m pretty sure a large number of people in Santo Domingo feel the same way.

This is great news.. Maybe my friends can get a pass to take the train and buy some clean water and a power generator!

Well, I would love to take the train but as long as it is not in hurricane season because another Hurricane George ('98) will wipe most of this work out (i.e. ocean surges, flooded tunnels etc). This was poor planning and payoffs to Gov officials to NOT do due diligence. Of course, the RD needs a rail system but one above ground. When you are earthquake prone like San Franciso, CA you focus on above ground trolleys and save the expenses of diggin up earth below ground. Millions wasted!

Years, from now just remember JD told you first!

JD those are great points you are making. I wonder what is the plan when a hurricane hit land? Here in Northern California and San Francisco we have beautiful cable cars and light rail cars that are very dependable, above ground, work great.
The government should work in the interior provinces infrastructure, not just in the capital. All the revenue that the Cibao produce goes out to be used at the capital.

I know the interenational companies can make a safe system. Far safer than cars. It's there, many people have contributed. The reasons I see in the posts are pitiful - there is little sign of earhquake damage in the Capital. Buildings have stood for hundreds of years. Look forward to riding......
Of course some stations fall into disuse.......

You guys would prefer a steam underground......

Don't you dare leave any gum on the underground.....
I think the last DR government bought a fleet of Korean buses for the PanAm games. The plan was that they would provide a bus fleet for the capital. However the buses did not like the hot weather and sit now rusting in a field somewhere.
Compared with this one has to hope the metro is good - should not overheat.

jajajajaj u got that right

abc200........very impressive, I'm glad you know about the subways and underground world, but you still don't know about the D.R., and its many and prolonged hours of no electricity, which by the way sometimes leave at the the rise of Mr. Sun and sometimes don't come back untill sun down, so tell us........ hot shot how is having a metro going to benefit us? If there's no electricity we won't be getting anywhere real fast, huuuuuu.

Man when do you think London got electricity? Not `1843!!!!!!!
The benefits were discussed in many countiies - it enables better living as people can travel to work, promotes commerce, education, stimulates many other sectors.
The Metro is fact,. Look at how the maximum benefits can be extracted.
I could argue that when it was started some other system could have been better. But the problems of Bangkok were similar - only parts of the city could have the skytrain. Others, more dense needed a metro.
