Santo Domingo. - Raccoons in the Isla Catalina national park, snails that devour rice plantations, insects and fungi that close the doors to certain foreign markets, are among the ore than 144 species of fauna and flora alien the native biodiversity that came to stay and whose impact on the economy and even on human health have yet to be assessed.
Alien species are one of the main concerns of environment authorities anywhere in the world, while locally an attempt to quantify it has transformed them into the project INBIDOM, which gathered experts in different fields to contribute their observations in 2002.
And the listing is barely an estimate, warns the biologist and Museum of Natural History Science Department director Carlos Suriel.
In fact, although the Environment Ministry reports the presence of 17 of the world’s 100 most dangerous invasive species, according to the listing of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), when compared with INBIDOM’s listing, at least 23 of them can be identified.
“Too high a number, says Suriel, there’s an indication of worsening of the invasions of exotic species are increasingly reported. The information is little and diffuse. What should’ve been a center to follow up these species with all the institutions, we haven’t been able to get up to date. The denunciations are done, but the issue doesn’t go any further, it’s not followed up."

Raccoons in Catalina Island now that's funny!
From: Dominican Republic
At least they have some kind of wildlife. The rest of the country seems to be totally void of anything other than stray dogs.
Funny thing here....whereas back home raccoons tend to spread garbage all over the place and create an eyesore....here ...thier handiwork would not make any difference. Are Dominicans related to this masked badit of the night???

"I think this is a good thing that our country has, biodiversity and species like raccoons, although they take part of the wildlife."
That is the very reason why I hate treehuggers.
They have no grasp of how nature works. All they care about is saving some warm and cuddly animal no matter what harn they cause.
Raccoons are not native to the Area. Their prescence is occupying space, consuming food and disturbing native wildlife.
The Solendron is allmost extinct due to non-native species.
I am very active in the control of non-native species in where I live.

anthonyC,
The wildlife, no matter how dangerous it can be to the human species, is essential for our habitat. Remember, we take part in the circle of life, and every species in this world had their own habitat and classification. We all share one planet, the Earth. Raccoons need us humans and we humans need raccoons, just like we need other types of species and vice versa.
BTW, you ARE the one who does not know a grasp of how nature works. Period!

A new "alien"... and so am I! Even though biodiversity "may" be positive, a country such as the DR must study the presence and consequences of racoons. Yes nature evolves and every specie has its "raison d'être" but how did they get there?
I have been reading daily comments for months. I appreciate the common sense, intelligence, knowledge, open-minded and respectul input from most of you... (After 32 years of teaching, I have come to understand that some will never reach that level... for different reasons...) Comments have improved and are more and more positive. You are constructive! I am not Dominican... I am not Haitian... I have close ties to the DR for the past 20 years through different projects and a son... of a Dominican mother and an " Haitian" father (born in DR) .

Eriliza, it is not as simple as you state it. the introduction of non native species into a new environment can have disastrous effects on the ecology. they have to eat, and therefore can cause severe displacement in the natural food chain, leading to the extinction of other species. look at the disaster which now exist in some rivers in the USA, because of the introduction of voracious and aggressive chinese carp. besides, raccoons are not the exact creature we need here. they are exceedingly aggressive, territorial, and dangerous. the dominican health system does not need to contend with the hydrophobia which results from raccoon bites.

anthonyc has a good point regarding introduction of non native species. but, being anthonyc, he cannot express it in a civil manner. he has to couch it in terms of ad hominems and attacks, instead of simply laying out his logic. man, this board is like an intellectual ghetto.

We have been invaded for long by a species of aliens similar to a locust plague that cuts and burns all the trees, poisons the environment with deadly CO2 gases making illegal charcoal, pollutes the scenery
by throwing garbage with no sense of hygiene, crowds our already lacking hospital facilities, hounds
automobile drivers at corners and intersections, and on top of all that is spiteful and full of anger and
is not grateful for the compassion he is shown and bites the hand that feeds them.
Those aliens invading us are called: ILLEGAL HAITIANS.

Domestic animals maintained within the confines of private property are not a problem. Escaped animals are.
Feral Dogs and Pigs are very damaging to the ecology.
The worse violator are cats.
If you are a cat owner and care about the enviroment you will keep them inside you homes 24/7. Outside they are extremely damaging and are the major cause of the decline in songbirds throught the world.

Domericano ....Dread must be mellowing in his old age ....I thought he would have chastised me for repeating a cute but some people think racist joke...I personally think it is not.....by the way when Dread lived in NYC he would take his kids to " We Be Toys "
From: Dominican Republic
Gc, there's not a racist bone in my body, but funny is funny!! And unfortunately alot of ethnic jokes are hilarious, and more often than not the people or ethnic groups that bear the brunt of the jokes are the first to laugh at it...............so long as it is not vicious or really demeaning. I am my own worst critic and the first to laugh at myself when I do something stupid. For instance the best Jewish jokes are always told by Jews and the same with black jokes always told by black comedians who by the way make millions of dollars telling them. The world needs more laughter especially in these tough times and the months/years to come........it's heart healthy to laugh. If someone wants to be serious about something let it be a game (monopoly, risk, etc) but be ready to laugh at the jokes the game we call life plays upon us. That's a bit of my philosophy and I'm sticking to it!!!!!!!!!!! Hey, I lived on 45th St & 8th Ave in the mid 70's and never saw that store, must be new! LOL
From: United States
GC knows that i love ethnic jokes. i am sure he knows many more than i will ever hear. as a black man, i find black jokes to be hilarious.Chris Rock rocks, for me, and DL HUGHLEY. i never get offended by them; it is attitudes that bother me.

It sounds like a move coming out the US to keep keep competitors out.
Let's remember that in the 90's US was working on the development of certain fungus that where supposed to be aimed at coca plants which they try to introduce to I believe Bolivia.
What a tragedy for the environment.
