SANTO DOMINGO.- The power companies demand an advance of US$200 million  from the Government’s US$458 million debt to buy fuel and begin solving the energy crisis that affects to the country.

Radhamés Segura, executive vice-president of the State-owned electrical companies (CDEEE) denied that the country is shut down, though recognized that the situation is critical and promised to advance US$50 million immediately.

He said however, that the discussion with the private power companies continues and couldn’t specify the date the US$200 million would be paid, and said the non-financed debt with the sector is US$313 million.

The official affirmed that the service would improve as several units have entered operation with 230 megawatts.

Hacienda minister Vicente Bengoa and Segura met yesterday with the heads of the power companies to seek a solution to the energy crisis that affects the country with blackouts as long as 20 hours.

Bengoa said high oil prices have created the electrical crisis and that the Government has US$80 million approved by the World Bank and looks for a loan of US$50 million more, and the rest, "the Government will look for it."

He added he’ll travel to Venezuela today to deal with a problem with the financing provided via the Petrocaribe oil deal and with the electrical sector, but didn’t specify the nature of the problem.

The solution is simple. PLD pay your bill with the power companies. You have already collected the electric bill you sent to the consumer so whats the problem?

Keep borrowing money to pay for your day to day operations. That should make the DR peso start to sink at an alarming rate.

I have been in this country for a period of 8-1/2 years, and we still have the self-same problem with the various Administrations NOT PAYING THEIR JUST BILLS.
This sort of situation is INTOLLERABLE to both the World Community AND the local population.
Each of the last two Administrations have been voted into office in response to their rhetoric about what they would do to solve the myriad of social and economic problems endemic to the country, yet NOTHING, yes NOTHING has been done to follow up on those promises. For how long do the politicians in this society think they can kep lieing to thepublic and maintain any semblance of integrity and honesty from their tenure in office when they display abject greed and inconsideration for those who put them in office,
One day they will wake up with a knife at their throat for the lack of action and progress.
Enough has been spent on other NON-ESSENTIAL projects to pay for and solve the electrical problem, don't you think??

NOT only don't they pay the electric companies but they don't pay for the freakin oil to begin with. We are getting indebted to Venezuala BIG TIME albeit at low interest rate. Where is all that money going?

Check their Swiss Bank accounts and you will see where the wise men put their bucks.

Dominicans continue to get hosed by their leaders. Hippo had the Sovereign Bonds and this bozo has the Venezuala Oil Loan Slush funds. It is so transparent these Bums don't even try to hide it yet the sheep say "Hooray my country is moving forward". SHEEP SHEEP Goat goats are all you people are for letting this happen to you.

Remember that when Leonel and his wife were simple lawyers with not a peso to their name prior to the election of Leonel to office.

Now look at their portfolio, the money did not come from their savings of their Dominican salaires.

Where do you think it came from?

The specific problem with the electrical sector (I mean other than the regular swind-ola) is that there are too many hands in the same basket. If the Kw were sold once, it would be much cheaper, but nooooo, th Kw is generated, then sold to the CDEEEEEEEEEEEE (every "E" means another crony in on the swind-ola), resold to the distributors that in turn have outsourced their labor to a PLD caudillo-owned BS company. There are more botellas in the electrical sector than at the Cerveceria Nacional, and the kW passes through 4 greedy hands before it gets (or not) passed on to the consumer. But "se fue la luz" is part of the great Dominican culture, as are the swind-ola and the warm beer.

they had the money, but they spent it elsewhere during the elections and are behind now. So even though oil is cheap, that $ is debt at the price the companies paid.

the only way to go is atomic energy and contract it out to france to maintain
and built the power plants as well as the distribution network. all the projects no matter how insignificant it is, they have to borrow money any way.

get rid of all these cronies and (botellas) . nothing works inthe hands of a corrupt gvt.. i don't have too much faith in their "so call democracy "

when people start paying their due metered electric bills and no showing preference because they are related to some one in power, things would change or else go the jail.

no subsidies of any kind . where the electric gener. power & distribution system would pay taxes as well as the consumers as it is here ,then you woud have an effective system .money coming in instead of going out as it is at present.

all they are using the system for is to create political positions while the country suffers and industries will not find it too appealing to invest money in a country that has no energy 'dr-cafta'
