SANTO DOMINGO.- While Dubai Sheik Mohamed Bin Zayed al Nahyan yesterday pledged his government’s efforts to solve Dominican Republic’s energy problem once and for all, back home violent protests across the country has led the population to despair.
In a meeting with president Leonel Fernandez, Abu-Dhabi Government prime minister Zayed al Nahyan, who’s also the United Arab Emirates crown prince, made firm investment commitments in the Dominican Republic in the areas of renewable energy, distribution, and in the construction of a hydroelectric.
During a more than one hour meeting in the Royal Palace, the United Arab Emirates crown prince was interested in knowing the problems that most affect Dominican Republic, where Fernandez began his third term in office less than three months ago.
The constant blackouts of up to 20 hours and increasing demands of basic public works and services has led the country to social a tension that the sociologist Tahira Vargas says is "difficult" for governance. "The Government is taking a risk by not taking measures as soon as possible."

Hey Rubi, I have visited the Salto Jiminoa and seen the destruction of what was (I think) a hydro- electric facility that looks `like it was hit with a smart bomb. I believe it was engineered to operate under ideal conditions and the engineers failed to account for extreme conditions of excessive waterflow such as what might occur during hurricane or sustained rainy weather. There are numerous places here that lend themselves to hydro-electric power but failsafes must be included in the design so they are not destroyed in a deluge. It's clean, renewable, not dependent on foreign oil or sweetheart deals with the duenos of the oil.............and the only kickbacks necessary to assure the flow would be to mother nature or whomever you believe to be in control of the resources..................certainly no one involved in politics!!!

Let me answer this question for you. It is pretty easy. Dominicans are by nature THIEVES and CRIMINALS. You teach your children that you shouldn't pay for things like electric and that polititians are good because you all always have your hands out for that bottle of Brugal Paint thinner so you can get more stupid after drinking it. Hey escott, Have you experienced Dominicans at the child level? in the pueblos, barrios that are not Americanized? I find them to be god fearing people and honest by nature that some later turn into thieves by necessity and example but that is no reason to generalize and degrade an entire culture due to your personal experiences. Maybe you have lived here too long!! I see all sides of the spectrum here but I do not live in the tourist community. I live with regular people in a smallish town and find most..............not all, but most to be genuine, caring human beings. Yes, I have had some bad experinces here with some assholes, but they would still be assholes if they were American, Canadian or European.............bad people are just that, BAD PEOPLE. Why don't you try getting out of the touristy North coast area where many Dominicans come solely for the purpose of getting over on foreigners and experience the REAL Dominicans, a caring and helpful people. Rubirosa, are you serious with that question about hydroelectric power ? do you know what it is? the reason why Norway has that amount of hydroelectric power is because it has rivers with sufficient force of flow to drive the turbines. how many rivers are there in the DR which can be applied to hydroelectric power? for a guy who is never reluctant to be gratuitously rude to other posters, you should censor your questions more carefully, so your ignorance is not readily apparent. rivers in norway hardly ever dry up, because of the temperatures of the country, and glacial runoff. in the DR, rivers are almost seasonal; in the rainy season, they flow powerfully; in the dry season, they become brooks.

The solution to blackouts is that the people must pay for the electricity consumed. But they cannot pay for their electricity bill because they have no money, and they have no money because they have no jobs, and they are no jobs because the DR posses instability risk and that keep investors away. Invest in education, so the people get better jobs and they will be able to make money to pay the electricity bill and any other bill. Energy is everyones birthright. Solar panels last in excess of 25 years. The DR needs a plant to make these in quantity sufficient say for 100 watts load per person. Also batteries/controllers. This might be supplemented by pumped storage and hydro. The raw materials are cheap and the energy payback period is about 1.5 years for the latest technology. Everyone could then have a free allocation of electricity - those not using it could take a divi in cash. I'm sure the Dominican people would see this as altogether fairer - even if there was an emergency tax on imports to finance ti. Sunlight is after all free.
