SANTO DOMINGO.- The National Business Council (CONEP) last night said the electrical system, with its deficits, debts and conflicts has become a cancer for the country’s development.

“With an electrical sector structured such as ours is impossible to develop our country. The electrical sector has become a cancer that consumes our gross domestic product and prevents us as a nation to develop new formulas for development,” said Rafael Blanco, who together with Marisol Vicens, spoke for the organization.

The business leaders met yesterday with ex president Hipólito Mejia in an effort to find a  solution to the problem.

Blanco Song said electricity has become the main element of cost for businesses. “This document tries to establish a serious and dispassionate discussion that integrates all the political sectors, because the problem has nothing to do with political factions.”

Vicens said there’s no a magical prescription to solve the electrical problem, rather a need of political will. “CONEP’s position is to do its part to look for a solution in an integral manner to solve the problem in a period of four years.”

These guys must be idiots or worse......." The business leaders met yesterday with ex president Hipólito Mejia in an effort to find a solution to the problem.".......What a total waste of time unless they met to have a few laughs.....meeting with Hippo to solve problems is like Custer meeting with the Indians for a map to get to the" Little Big Horn "......I can here Custer saying to his men " Hurry up you guys or we will miss the Indians "

Hippo? Are you kidding? They probably wanted to find out how much he got for extending the Madrid accords for 12 years. If he gave some back maybe the failed gov't could pay the generators what they owe.

The real cancer are the people in charge of our electricity, most notably Radhames Segura.

This speaks volumns!! The business leaders here have to speak to the Hippo in Lionel's absence and silence is a crime in and of itself. It's almost comical, but it's better to laugh than cry. For Lionel's sake (and the country's sake) let us hope he comes back with some real, right now solutions. Maybe those oil rich sheiks will help with some of their untold billions. Let's just hope he doen't sell his 1/2 of the island and retire to Switzerland or something. Has anybody seen what's going on in Dubai? Dubai now has the largest, tallest, most lavish, most beautiful of everything...It's going to be the center of the world soon!! With some regular electricity the DR could be the center of the Carribean, even more so than it already is. Maybe Lionel should stay over there and enjoy some of the monies he has accumulated and just send back one of his suits in his stead.................business as usual. Let someone who's honest and really cares fill the void and see to the people's needs.

Oh dear God. Do Dominicans have to show how stupid they are on a daily basis?

Hippo cause the Bank failures, allowed drug deal to be rampant in the armed services and I am sure his answer to the problem is "just steal it".'

Forget the METRO and invest in alternative energy technologies! The Article states the obvious! DR electrical generation relies on hydrocarbon and distribution is plagued by old transmission technology and human sabotage (people stealing metal for money like it is happening in SC, Ga, LA, and MS in the U.S.). But the posters in this thread love to characterize this problems in terms of american or Haitian or PR historical or culturals icons! Stop the bologne and face the fact that without reliable electricity, the GNP/jobs/financial will take a hit! It is not corruption that is killing the supply of electricity. It is a combination of old technology, irresponsible people (who steal and don't pay), and a spike in commodity cost!

National exams reveal deficiencies

A total of 32,827 high school students, or 16%, failed the national exams in 2007, which forced them to repeat eighth grade. This is compounded by the fact that 15,000 students failed to finish the eighth grade because they dropped out or were unable to reach the minimum 65% score needed in order to take the national exams. Of the 205,173 students who took the national exams in 2007, 183,976, or 89.6%, performed dismally and were forced to retake the exams later in the year.

Now we are really desperate when we ask Hipoloco the moron to lend a hand. This ninkenpoop resembling Moe of the three stooges is more to blame than anybody for the present electrical crisis.
Balaguer at the end became senile and let his cronies sell him the stupid contracts that we signed
under duress when new power generation was urgently required. Then came the PLD "privatization"
and Hipoloco's PRD Madrid accords that were more corruption treaties and the buy back of the bankrupt power companies in order to try to be graceful with his majesty the king of Spain before Mejia left for his tour of Spain. (While Hipoloco was there King Juan Carlos publicly put him down in front of everybody present.)
So we are back at square one having to pay the ridiculous Balaguer contracts for plants that don't have to be producing electricity to get paid.
There is only one way out of this mess is by facing the problems head on and solving it with whatever it takes!
Testicular fortitude!

josean;
this link with mini nuclear plants is my cup of tea.
I have a long track record on endorsing safe nuclear energy and its clean uses.
The question remains whether the new technology will be allowed for export to banana republics.
$25 million to power 25,000 homes comes out to 0.10 cents a kilo for 10 years. Cheaper that what we are paying now for irregular service and constant and unending aggravation.
