Santo Domingo.- The Las Americas Airport terminal’s parking fee has jumped more  a 400 percent after the new administrators took over from Aerodom.

Victor Rafael Lantigua, a user who leaves his vehicle in the long term area, when he learned of the increase, said he prefers to pay a taxi to take him there. He said he travels periodically for business and parked his vehicle in AILA for more than five years, but will no longer do so.

The new managers charge one peso per minute, or 60 pesos per hour, whereas Aerodom charged 20 pesos per hour in short term, 30 pesos per hour for general parking and 20 pesos for long term the first hour, with 10 pesos for each additional hours.

Long term parking cost RD$190 for 24 hours and RD$610 per week, but now, at one peso per minute, 24 hours would be RD$1,440, and one week costs RD$10,080.

These thiefs from AERODOM, were locked into their fees and sold to a shell company which they also control. These are the same crooks from CAP CANA.

Who the hell pays $300 a week for airport parking. You pay less tha that at a Manhattan Downtown lot.

Is this how they want to motivate travel. What F*&^%#ing improvemenst have they made to the parking facilities to merit this.

If more people were aware of this price gouging before the go to the airport, would they be smart enough to figure out how to get to the airport without having to park their car? A simple boycott of the parking might possibly, in time, force a reduction of these outrageous rates.

In many ways this is not unlike the usurous rates charged by the banks. The people are stupid, or desperate enough to pay 24%+ to the banks so why should they charge less? The same thought applies to parking.

This is the standard RD practice of all merchants that is... price gouging! RD prices charged by merchants have remained high at the old RD exchange rate of 60 to the US dollar and never came down. Also, there has been much de-flation on commodity prices, fuel and transport costs and the merchants never passed on the benefits of DR-CAFTA to Dominican consumers.

So when the Ministry of Industry & Commerce says they are keeping prices under control .... they have done NOTHING.

The best thing the RD can do is allow for incentives for WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes etc to enter the RD market and create JOBS but also the spillover benefit is to end price collusion that keeps Dominicans paying more to get less!

Lets boycott the airport parking! Not hard to do and save some money. The new managers will get the message (because their costs have NOT increase 400% to justify this inflation).

Are the new prices posted clearly, I am sure there are people who will park there to drop off or pick up loved ones and dig in their pocket to find they don't have enough to pay .

This is an outrage.. and at least price gouging , the government needs to get this under control.

Not bad enough they gouge you with taxes and charge an arm and a leg for extra bags now this.

I agree take a taxi and screw them!

Why is there no bus transport on an hourly basis from the city like most civilized cities ....backpackers and budget travelers would like to avoid very expensive taxis...there is an employee shuttle but it is a well kept secret and the public may use it...8 passengers at a time

they should also if they want to raise the prices to reflect other locales for parking then provide for decent bus transportation to the airport say from Caribe Tours every two hours for example all international airports have an alternative to paying exorbitant taxi rates....back packers and budget travelers would appreciate it

Bernies,

The weekly parking fee at SDQ is RD$10,080 at today's current exchange rate that comes to US$304.67. Parking at JFK or LGA in New York City will cost US$105 per week in the extended parking zone. Parking in SDQ is just under 3 times more costly per week than parking in either of the two airports of one of the most expensive cities in the world.

They need a metro extension to the Airport or light railway - DR has too many cars. It is good when parking charges are increased. Backpackers at the moment walk a mile or so to the Highway and catch a gagua. The Costa del Sol is linked by light railway, including airport.

the daily rates and weekly rates are not posted in this article for SDQ.....if they just extend the hourly rate that would be stupid and antagonistic...these changes were long overdue and out of balance ......they should also if they want to raise the prices to reflect other locales for parking then provide for decent bus transportation to the airport say from Caribe Tours every two hours for example all international airports have an alternative to paying exorbitant taxi rates....back packers and budget travelers would appreciate it

GC,
Thanks GC, I should read with more understanding. My apologies, Mr. Bernies, I referenced the costs incorrectly.

Taxi from Punta Cana, Sosua, Samana or even Dajabon will not run over $200 USD, you get picked up and dropped off where you want, and while you are away you don't need to think whether your car will be same as you left it because you'll know it's safely parked in your driveway.

If they keep the rates what an business opportunity for someone to lease a piece of land near the airport and a few vans to shuttle people.

Am I the only one who thinks the taxi union is in on this?? If not, there would definitely be shuttle bus service from the city...the new owners of the airport could run it it themselves, of sub it out and make even more money. Clearly no one will willingly pay these parking prices...

Come on, who would dare, curtail the "DUENOS EL PAIS" (owners of the country) the FENATRANO union of car and bus drivers. They are currently striking so that the METRO system can not be integrated with the Govt Bus system under 1 trip 1 Fee. Where you purchase a bus ticket and get on the train with a transfer.

You think they would let the AERODOM or anyone except them transport to and from Airport.

We just went through 3 years of fighting to get decent parking fees for AIRCRAFT, which were $20 a day and $20 a night.= $40 (small plane). It is down to $10 a day (24hrs). SO IT IS CHEAPER TO PARK A PLANE THAN A CAR. HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE.

ABR I love it planes cheaper than cars ....you are right on about sleazeball sindicatos and bus service ...If only the government would show some fortitude and break these guys ....the parking rates daily and weekly and long term will be adjusted that is only logical....but not hourly

Security there has always been an Issue. Long Term parking you keep your car near the toll booth, to be sure it does not get stolen. And Yet, they get stolen.

Hey, this is the same Airport and security team, that is having the RUNWAY repaved and fixed and when they turned on the runway lights only 1 light worked. Like xmas lights the were in sequence and someone ????? stole 2 miles of electrical cable.

General Que Paso? No se, Ask the Coronel, Ask the Major, Ask the Captian,**** Cabo ? yo no, yo estaba alli comiendo yanikeke.

The Bus UNIONS, jeezes, do not, get me started. Did not these idiots think that the train was to move the people in a more organized, no civilized manner.
So the train stops are to be combined with bus stops from OMSA (govt) to "work" on schedule, bus gets there drops off and picks up from metro. As you walk out of metro you get a transfer to get on bus. Come on bus get a transfer to get on metro.

Who wants to get off the air conditioned TRAIN and ride on a crappy bus with no windows and a loud radio, playing bachata.

HELL JUST GIVE FENATRANO THE DAMN TRAIN, THEY CAN MAKE IT RUN ON HOUSEHOLD COOKING GAS, AND MAKE BETWEEN STATION STOPS.

Sometimes like the BABY POLAR BEAR joke, I want to ask my dad, you sure we came from here. Yes my son we did, and mom too, yes she did too. So how come i'm always so cold (read dum ass backwards).

At first I just thought you was just another ignorant kid.

Now I know you are just plain stupid!

Extend the Metro to the Airport? Have you ever even been to the DR?
