SANTO DOMINGO.- Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia is convinced that Dominican tourism will surface unscathed from the global financial crisis, as he said has occurred in other occasions.
Yesterday the official said his arguments aren’t just based on optimism, citing that the industry’s growth until November was 2 percent.
He also spoke of his plans to improve the environs of the resort regions.
“Tourism is infallible to the great crises because it has withstood all of them,” he said, adding that despite the global financial crisis’ impact on the tourist business, Dominican Republic’s industry grew from January to November, compared with the same period last year.
Garcia said the tourist activity in general has been able to withstand five crises: the United States real estate problems, the jump in oil prices, the fall in food production, and the difficulties in the financial and equity markets.
He said the number of tourists from the United States - the financial fiasco’s epicenter and simultaneously the country’s main market, grew 1.61 percent this year.
As to the winter season that begins in December, he said it has begun well, above the expectations in a year that been has been marred by an economic crisis of global dimensions.
Interviewed by the Corripio Communications Group, Garcia said three fundamental zones sustain the Dominican tourism market: North America, Europe and the emergent countries.
United States, Canada and Mexico account for 50 percent of the tourists; Europe 39.8 percent and emergent countries 10 percent.
The number of tourists from North America grew 4.52 percent from January to November, although from Europe there was a 2 percent loss, “because when periods of crisis take place the most affected markets are the far destinations.”
Garcia stressed that despite those negative numbers, France, the European country that brings the most tourists to the country, grew 3 this year.
He said the figures from the countries known as emergent such as Russia grew 88 percent; Poland 83 percent; Argentina 29 percent; Chile 38 percent and Peru 43 percent. “So what we must do is to define strategies for 2009, to cushion the negative part that’s projected for the summer.”

Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia would have a difficult time painting such a rosy picture to the operators....who if they are reading this are currently laughing through their tears...they will need relief soon to be competitive as the Caribbean including the cruise industry sharpen there pencils and begin heavy discounting... Francisco Javier Garcia was not born the last time the problems were this grave

maybe he should inform the operators of empty hotels on the north coast that they are really full, or experiencing a 3% uptick in occupancy rates. they just fail to realise it, due to inattention. these delusional types that operate this government would be better off running a yanikeke stand. where do they find these people?

I would like to propose that all Dominican Ministers who wish to make a public statement do the following. Prior to speaking to the press they must allow themselves to be hooked up to a lie detector machine. The must also allow their genitals to be hooked up to an electrical source that will shock him whenever the lie detector detected a lie. That would eliminate all public statements from these charlatans.

Javier Garcia is not good with real projections of figures. Perhaps it is his Rose Colored Glasses? 2009/10 will be extremely rough for the DR Tourism Trade. Let him keep preaching his skewered optimism. Just like his boss making the irresponsible (stupid) statement that " the DR will not be impacted by the World Financial Crisis" a few weeks ago as he was boarding his plane to Miami. These guys are all on a different plane (not the real world). Javier Garcias's compensation/salary should be tied to the accuracy of his forecast numbers for the Tourism Trade.

juanb, that won't work, as they know that they are speaking the truth. They (funcionarios) can't help themselves, for they dont know the difference between truths and lies. Therein is the fundamental problem. They live in a different dimension (not the real world).

the guy could simply have treated the country like adults and told them the truth. they can handle it, if you give them a chance. they understand that everyone can be a victim of conditions. but they are so reflexively conditioned to lying, they cannot help themselves. while every other government is bracing its people for the repercussions of this malaise, the DR must be the only one telling everyone that all is rosy! they are pitiful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpuJvkNMoKs&NR=1You may ask what this has to do with the thread, well I was looking for a video from the aftermath of hurricane Hugo in 1989. I have a VHS version that shows a picture in picture of the Governor of the islands talking about no looting, all made up and way out of proportion and in the other picture it shows people with axes breaking into a jewlery store, people raiding the grocery stores and all around general mayhem. It is not just the DR politicos who can lie with a straight face !!!

With the Millions the DR is spending on ads in the US even if there is a small increase in visitors it will be far below what they thought would be the take in 2009. When the slowdown really hits and the taxi drivers and the resort help and the contruction works are hungry there will be no where to turn but to the truth. And while hundreds of development projects sit useless in the tourism office you have to ask why... what about the jobs they would create? Someone make me understand.

The focus has moved somewhat. To the Samana peninsula and Punta Cana. There are some great deals being snapped up. Villas within a few steps of magnificent beaches and with all the facilities of the town of Las Terrenas from 140 thousand Euros. Magnificent mountain hide-aways with ocean view, infintity pools etc. from 500,000 Euros, a small fraction of South of France prices.
Of course demand is extrordinarly high with the huge number of people taking early retirement and the tremendous advantages of these parts of the DR with highest investment returns. New roads open and planned for Samana are having a high impact. Also the new airport that means that important World Centres such as Paris, Frankfurt and Milan are just a few hours away.
Punta Cana now has direct link to Moscow and Sau Paulo. There is also much interest from Arab investors.

If DR has a revolution they will be appropriated by local committees for rest homes, hospitals and military watchtowers. During the German occupations.of Jersey all the best places were taken over by the military. Having so many beautiful rest homes will surely make the revolution more attractive Just as the Senate, commissioned by Catherine the Great became residence to great party leaders such as Lenin, local leaders in the DR will have residences of great standing.

The DR has 60 thousand hotel rooms to fill on the entire Island and travel and tourism is hurting....to put that in perspective there is a little city in Nevada called Las Vegas that will soon open its 150 thousandth room in one town....talk about competition....then there is that quaint little town Orlando with about 100 thousand plus rooms thrown into the mix as well....go figure...and they are not going to put those cruise ships in mothballs either.....this government is not telling the truth about economic stability in 2009

This was to be expected but , however the DR needs to step things up a bit.
Maybe the DR should use some it's marketing money and counter on the most popular websites.
