It's hard to believe whysmith but you may be right hey Lat or any music affecionado out there, I thought merengue was from Puerto Rico.
The merengue is a Musical genre and a Danse born in Dominican Republic (area of Cibao) towards 1850, and now also interpreted by Porto Rican artists . Its origins are dubious: one of the assumptions would be that it would come from a dance called the upa Habanera which comprised a step of dance called “merengue”; it could also be derived from a musical style Haiti in, méringue.
The folk merengue ( merengue típico ), uses a Accordéon, a Güira, a Tambora and small a drum with double head, sometimes a Marimba, as well as the Bandurria which was supplanted by the Accordéon.
The merengue remained a dance of the countryside, criticized by the Bourgeoisie which preferred the Tumba until the dictator Rafael Trujillo does not declare it “official national dance”.

Would you care to show the proof for once in your life? The most common belief, antonio, is that merengue had its origins on the Cibao region during the 1850's, although I'm not a music aficionado by any means, generoso told me that he knew the guy which would go to make it popular in Haiti, which I believe is Joseíto Mateo. You can ask him if you have any doubts. The only genre that I have heard was made on PR would be the Salsa, and not directly, cuz' this would be an invention of the Newyoricans (PR's living on NYC) more than anything else. Regueton is a panamean invention (and a very atrocious one at that, in my humble opinion).

I agree Lat but it appears the Dominican that created MERENGUE may have been inspire by the Haitian meringue and the Cuba dance call the upa
So as quoted WhySmith is indeed correct as stated above MERENGUE come from MERINGUE come from Haiti.

Dominican Republic produces beautiful women. Those women are a mix of: free black slaves from Africa (Haitian) + Taino + Spaniard. But Haiti was the one that opened the way for black/colored women in the international beauty pageantry. Haiti had produced several international beauty pageant celebrities such as Claudinette Fouchard in 1960, Gerthie David in 1975 and Marjorie Judith Vincent Miss America in 1991.
One story that has caught my attention is the story of a black woman of Dominican origin, Denny Mendez, who faced harsh racism in Italy after she won the "Miss Italy" title. The world didn't know her as "morena". They just called her a black woman. PERIOD. DR got a taste of its own medicine.
DR has a lot to learn. I have nothing against DR. Sometimes I can be the toughest critic. I had also criticized Haitians thugs like Raoul Cedras, Guy Philippe, Chamblain, etc... the same way.

I find your criticism of the DR's racial classifications unjust and hypocrite, specially when we take into account that Brazil and Haiti have the same, if not more complex, racial hierarchies. On Brazil, that miss Italy would have been called a "parda" or a "morena" and in Haiti she would have been called a "marabou" or "griffone". Plus, unlike Brazil and Haiti, in the DR people of colour have more opportunities of reaching social and economic power. (cont...)

(cont..) a fact that can be proven by the sizeable number of people of colour or black having high ranking military and political posts across the country. Heck, even the exclusive Catholic clergy have high ranking bishops coming from popular extraction. So excuse me if I don't buy your rethoric of this country being an absolute pigmentocracy as it's your country's or Brazil's case. Specially when a simple glance at the realities of the three countries can easily refute your biased and malicious assessments. Judging by all the discussions we have had, it's obvious that neither of us will ever yield on any of our views, no matter how biased they might be, so we'll just have to agree to politely disagree. I guess that it goes as in the old saying: "Al arbol que da frutos es al que se le tira piedras" (The tree that produces is the one in which the stones are thrown, or something like that).

As I said, we'll have to agree to disagree, cuz' you'll never be able to convert me to your malicious views, specially when the economic reality of the island is backing my own views. How can my country be more racist than yours, when in your own country only a 5% of the population, the light skinned elite, is the owner of the few sources of income of that country, even the monopoly of the international aid? are you ignoring the fact that 50% of the haitian populace is illiterate? or that 90% of the population survives with less than a dollar a day? or the fact that your women have to come to our medical facilities in order to give birth with some modicum of decency, and without risk to their lives or their children, since the few medical facilities of your country only cater to the light skinned elite? Please, the fact that you're even trying to convert people to your lies is an insult to everyone's intelligence, and a glaring proof of your envy and lack of scruples. (cont...)

Regarding your question, antonio, I think that the caste system is relevant in the fact that it serves to exclude certain segments of the population in Latin America from entering the social circle of the elite. Although this don't exclude the majority of the population from advancing on the economic ladder as it was the norm on the colonial era. The proof of this is for example the fact that in the DR, notwithstanding its lip service to that practice, have the peculiar trait of having a political and military class that is not the exclusive dominion of the light skinned elites, as it is the norm on the rest of Latin America. You'll find that the majority of the high ranking leaders of the biparty system (PRD, PLD) are people coming from such poverty laden barrios as Villa Juana or Villa Consuelo, and that the majority of the high ranking generals in the army come from the south, the poorest region in the entire country. Although the economic elite is still the monopoly of the Cibao,
Written by: Lautaro, 30 Dec 2008 8:59 AM

(cont...) but this comes from the fact that the majority of the agricultural resources of the country (heck, from the whole island at this stage) comes from that region, and the fact that the light skinned population of the country is concentrated on that area, a population that took the opportunity afforded by the caste system to appropiate themselves of the majority of the producing land of that region, creating large plantations which are the base for the exportations that the country have, an arrangement that I can't find a fault with, considering the wasteland that it would be right now had the country experienced the misfortune suffered by the haitian agrarian apparatus, which got so divided among peasant holdings that it was the chief cause for the coffee exportations of the country to gradually disappear in favor of a subsistence farming, a trend that not even the yankees with their militaristic unilateral policies could reverse, which have led to the erosion seen nowadays.
