Santo Domingo.- The nine members of the Chamber of Accounts handed over checks totaling RD$563,947.20 each yesterday, paying back the Christmas salaries and bonuses they had awarded themselves despite not having served the requisite minimum three months in post.

The checks totaled RD$5,075,524.80 and were received by the Chamber’s financial director, Ana María Arias, who deposited them in the institution’s current account number 010-251749-5 at the Banco de Reservas.

Chamber of Accounts president Licelott Marte de Barrios assured the public that if this was not enough for some sectors and they continued to call for the Chamber members’ resignation, the members were willing to submit themselves to political judicial process and be summoned by the National Congress.

"We are willing to discuss whatever they want us to talk about, but at this moment none of us have considered resigning because we don’t feel we have done anything that requires a resignation”, she stated.

Marte de Barrios said that all the state decentralized institutions and other government entities pay the Christmas salary and bonus to their employees. Critics had the right to demonstrate against this.

“If the choice was to pay back (the funds) we are doing so, now if after paying them back new avenues are opened and they want us to travel down them, we will have to do so”, she added.

This is a first step in acknowledging they were wrong in their actions. Lets hope that this will lead the DR government to look inward and see where else they can trim the fat and reduce the friviolous spending they are famous for. Now if they would just cut the 40 odd ministers without functions and all of the assistants that go with them.

Great. They admitted they have stolen something, got caught, and are willing to give it back (only because they got caught). How about throwing them in jail for a while? At the very least we should get rid of them before their next theft (which might go undiscovered).

Come on Lie-onel fire them. This way you can take the moral high ground , so when you go to the next do nothing international forum you can demand transparency on the cause of the world's financial crisis!

You hypocritical bum you!

GC, you are 100% right. if they had a bit of common decency , they would resign en masse. say what you will about the Brits, but when they get caught in dishonorable misadventures, they make it right by their actions; usually they resign. these lowlives just live to fight, and steal, another day.

Wait a minute. I just realized the worst part of this whole story. By exactly how many days were they short of their entitlement to each receive more than HALF A MILLION PESOS for their hard work?

They have no shame, for in their own minds, they have not done anything to be ashamed about. They each have lived the Dominican priviledged life (at least for the past 15 years) and feel it is their RIGHT to grant themsevles free money. They will never resign! These folks are so disconnected from the real Dominicano, it is almost laughable. That is a major problem in the society. Very much like Ted Kennedy @ Chappaquiddick mindset, Who me? I have done nothing wrong? FAILED STATE.... While LF goes around wih his shovel.

And you are all fools if you believe that story, they will let this issue to get cold and then they will take the money (that they have earned working so hard to become members of the Chamber) back later, maybe as representation expenses.

"disconnected from the real Dominicano"

So true, their approach is keeping them stupid and poor.

Actually I like "demand transparency ".

The only thing Dominicans can be transparent about is their corruption. They wear it like a badge of honor.

Does nobody ever get tired of the same corrupt crap that the Dominican officals dish out to its population.

My god what is needed is a good revolution and kick ass attitude to the corrupt government led by Leonel and fostered by his cronies in power.

Its the same garbage everyday and nothing happens.

Jim, nothing happens because of the dependency syndrome. the guys who benefit when one party is in power will not complain, and the opposition sits meekly and waits its turn to do more of the same. there is no semblance of modern vision. electioneering, not governance, is what is important. and, electioneering is an exercise in giveaways. and sellouts.

Democracy is not Exportable. Some nations cannot accept/adapt and will never be truely democratic. Many African and LA countries fall into this category. It is all based on BASIC EDUCATION. The DR is so far behind when it comes to Education, you are basically addressing children (who are adults) that lack any rational or reasonaing capabilities. The US has made this mistake in Iraq, they (and several other Mid-east nations) can never and will never be Democratic !

Thanks for the advice. I've been so busy finishing this dissertation and UNDP report, that I've neglected all opinion articles. But I need to get back into the thick of things.

Cheers,
