Tegucigalpa.– The nations of Central America want to adopt a common currency and a shared credit
fund to combat the global financial crisis. Meeting in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the
region's seven countries, plus the Dominican Republic, also agreed to introduce a
common passport for their citizens.
No timetable for instituting the proposals was given.
At present, El Salvador and Panama use the US dollar, while Belize, Costa Rica, the
Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras have their own currencies.

We are not going to destroy our nationalities by surrendering our currencies and passports and then honoring somebody elses martyrs and freedom fighters! Not in the name of economic progress or to combat financial crisis, we are not going to drop Duarte, Sanchez and Mella! F*K Washington and its freaking stupid values! We fought Haitians, Spaniards, French, English, and Yankees so that for economic convenience we are now to welcome american crap? In 15 years, the U.S. will not longer be an economic power so don't compromize the future generation and the survival of our cultures and acttitudes to the stupid americans!

I don't care what anyone says or calls me for being a nationalist, but let's get real, someday the whole of latin america will adopt a single currency, a single passport, a single military, and a single nationality. This a great idea. The Euro has helped most nations in Europe. The dollar is a bad currency for developing nations. Russia is also proposing a new currency for its main trading partners. This new currency will surely be essential in the future to manage the block economy and prevent a repetition of current dollar problems.

The dollar may soon be a dangerous place to be: Credit for importers in the US may dry up. China is pressing the US to take action:
"
During meetings between US and Chinese finance officials in Beijing, China called on the US to boost its savings rate and to protect Chinese assets and investments in the US.
"The important reasons for the US financial crisis include excessive consumption and high leverage," China's central bank governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, told US officials.
"The United States should speed up domestic adjustment , raise its savings rate and reduce its trade and fiscal deficits," he said.
He also said the US needed to "take the initiative... and reduce its trade and fiscal deficits".
"

Why are we trying to repeat history? All the regions were once one kingdom and eventually broke up into nation states. Even if there is unification, nationalism will never die and as differences become abundant, greedy politicians will recreate them for their own benefit. And by the way, if the open borders and common passport happens, forget Haitians going to DR (by the way, notice how they were missing from the list), millions making it to the northernmost central american country to eventually try to come to the US is more like it.

No-one should have any fear. Although there is a temporary setback German Auto workers get double the pay, better health service, bettter pensions, better holdiays, shorter working week etc. than Americians. This is althugh the country is poorer in natural resources. The Euro and the European system of socially responsible companies with supervisory boards can take much credit. Why they let the likes of Dobbs airtime without debate give out his rubbbish with every second statement exposing his extreme Xenophobia, narrow mindlessness and economic illiteracy. Let's wait and see if the Euro survives a global downturn. As it stands I've read some Europeans are hoarding German minted Euros and passing on Spanish, Italian, etc bills.
I'd have to read more about this but at first blush sounds like a bad idea for DR, especially if there really is some sort of South American currency on the horizon which would be a better option.
From: Dominican Republic
Its called AMERO and its not going to be just a south American currency. Its for the whole Americas. Get it Amero for America. Now the US dollar has to crash first so that people will better accept this new currency that is one of the reasons why they are going to let the auto companies fail. They are not really failing but they are the easiest scapegoat big industry they can find. Second they had to get raid of the gas guzzlers somehow. GM-FORD-CHRYS are going to merge sort of and they will start producing more Hybrids ect....anyway you get the point.

You need a strong and mature legal system for anyone to even start thinking about unified legal tenders in latin america. What Latin american country do you know has a strong legal system?
What latin american country imports less than they export? Don't get me wrong guys.... I love being Latin.... unfortunately we are not even close to being like European nations... and they are having their own issues. Italy is way down. Iceland is way down... Russia is a huge threat.
Not to say Latin America has a Russia breathing down its neck, it does not; what it does have is fragile legal systems; low literacy and high poverty.
In the mean whiile the british sterling and the us dollar will remain king. Lets work on literacy, strong legal systems and social programs first; when we have 92% literacy across the board then we will stop electing cronies into government, improve our living standards and then it will otherwise be in a position to support Ameros or whatever.

An interesting article on how the US dominated IMF has led to inequality and poverty. It is now urgent to set up new currency, trading and loan arrangements.
In a previous time when the US was up to its usual manipulative mischief a local company managed to trade radio sets for Polish( then communist ) bacon. This proved of benefit to both sides. With respect I believe jacavedo is putting the egg before the chicken. His good things will follow when the region breaks free of the US, IMF etc. I have traded with unstable countries with poor governments. One win-win situation leads to another. It is also good that both Russia and Europe are wanting to increase ties. One can only hope that the Monroe doctrine and corrupt companies such as Wal-Mart that have held Caribb and S. America in near servitude can now be defeated..

As long as we have weak legal systems, High iliteracy, no qualitative or quantitative social programs, and oligarchy in the latin american regions the main obstacles will continue.
What time frame is required for these fitness criteria mentioned to materialize in Latin America...
To deal with the likes of the IMF your ethics need to be very high otherwise cable TV and Fast food will be the status quo.
