SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez last night authorized the purchase of 2.5 million chickens, 1 million hens and eggs, at a cost of more than RD$270 million, which ends the conflict with the country’s chicken farmers, who immediately announced they’ll call off their planned protests.

The Head of State met for almost two hours with representatives of poultry producers associations, as well as with the leaders of trucking companies in the National Palace, to discuss the poultry industry’s problem after Haiti banned their import.

After the meeting Agriculture, Salvador Jiménez said the Government has already bought to date around 200,000 chickens to freeze them. He said measures will be taken to prevent poultry farmers from going bankrupt.

He said live chicken will cost 12 pesos per pound and 21 pesos when frozen, which he said will help the poor and local farmers.

Jiménez said he spoke with Haiti ambassador Fritz Cineas, on his government’s ban, and that the diplomat told him he expects the problem will be solved as soon as possible.

I wonder what happened to Laissez-faire Capitalism, the government should allow the invisible hand of the market and all that jazz.

Oh, I forgot this is an election year and we must guarantee El Jefes reelection.

What is the chicken to egg to vote ratio and how will the pollsters measure this?

However, Lion-nel has answered the dilemma of the ages, as to which comes first "the chicken or the egg," now we know its both, then the VOTE!

So what happens to the chickens and eggs the government buys? will it go to poor Dominicans, if thats the case its a win win situation fo Pres. Fernandez, as long as no one tries to re sell the chicken at market price or export it.

This is a prudent move by Leonel. He tries here to protect and preserve part of the agricultural base of the DR, implying that the problem with sick chickens will not be resolved immediately. Laissez-faire or neo-liberal capitalism is ideological garbage which, contrary to the dictates of the IMF, World Bank, and IADB, should never guide economic policy.

To be sure, there are political implications of this move. If the bourgeois opposition were over-ambitious, it could politically exploit the sick chickens. But so far, it has not been purely opportunistic about the sick chickens.

The key thing is the recovery or destruction of the sick chickens. The bourgeois state in the DR is not exactly transparent about the measures it is taking to resolve the problem, perhaps fearing that more news about the chickens will exacerbate the problem.

Chicken farmers bear some of the blame; a massive destruction of even susceptible chickens would have been reassuring at the get-go.

At the beginning of the outbreak, many of the chickens farmers seem more concerned about their financial interests than public safety, presuming an apparent antagonism between these interest and safety. [Simialr to large sectors of the US bourgeoisie and climate change issue.]

Perhaps, now, after watching their financial interests partially evaporate, these chicken farmers will realize or understand that no antagonism exists between their interests and the public's safety.

Now, the farmers are stuck with a non-transparent procedure for resolving the crisis. They are lucky that the Dominicans seem so calm about the chickens.

"And i bet to you that you are the kind of people that leonel love to have,"

0000

Assuredly.

So, I can't accept the bet.

And not just Leonel feels that way.

0000

"you have some one behind your back and tapping you for every thing that you said"

I would welcome an assistant, but unfortunately there aren't any takers.

Great move by the government, we needed to seattle this issue once and for all, I suggest avoid selling anything to those folks on the other side, perhaps some of the many Haitian businessman in Miami/NY can supply their country with all the chicken they need at a reasonable cost and only 5 to 7 sailing days to away.

Santanar, Why don't YOU tell them to stop selling all other products to the other side?

That would teach them?

ok so the president is buying 2.5 million chickens. I already told my parents not to eat chicken (a lo mejor le pusieron tres pasito, para que cuando los Dominicanos se lo coman se acaben de joder).
Is Leonel given the for free to the PRD people???

"Is Leonel given the for free to the PRD people???"

oooo

Come now ... really ... isn't Leonel a man of good taste? Would he feed these chickens to the PRD?

Assuming that he intends to, is 2.5 million chickens enough for these gluttons?
