SANTO DOMINGO.- Around 5 million tourists will visit Dominican Republic in 2012, bringing with them 5 billion dollars in income, said Tourism minister Felix Jiménez on Thursday, basing his projections on the "millions" the Dominican Government spends in the tourism regions, as well as on the "imminent" start of major real estate projects in Punta Cana (east).

"The Government has invested around 100 million dollars in the tourism sector, in addition to investments in areas such as roads, sanitary cleanup, beach regeneration and the elimination of shanty areas of the tourism zones," said Jiménez in a statement read during the Business Table hosted by the British magazine The Economist in Santo Domingo on Thursday.

During the next four years, the official said, there will be 2,500 more hotel rooms in the country, and that in 2007 to build a hotel room cost more than 140,000 dollars on average, compared with 40,000 dollars 10 years ago. "The real estate investments go hand in hand with development of important attractions, such as golf courses and marinas, and just in the East, from Juan Dolio to Bavaro, 15 golf facilities are operating, whereas eight others are being built."

As to the environmental aspect, the Tourism minister said it’s a requirement for tourism development. "As you know, the model ‘everything included’ tends to concentrate the income around resorts, limiting the benefits the communities derive, while other modalities spread the income in a more democratic manner, which indicates that we are headed toward a more a sustainable model in environmental, social and economic terms.”

This is an excellent projection .....but do not believe it is automatic ...hard work and integrity are required.....we have the raw materials and labour.......The..Integrity meaning elimination of corruption may be lacking.....upscale or cheeseball that is the choice.....we must minimize CORRUPTION

If DR is good at one thing it is at projecting and increasing its tourism sector... I only wish they would apply the same energy on solving the educational, medical, transportation, security, electrical crisis...

A democratic Cuban will detour investment away from DR. However, it wont be the end of the world, and from the looks of it, democracy in Cuba may still be a few years away.

BASTA does this means that the DR have no Europeans, Asians, Canadians or any other tourist that are not americans. The only country that has an embargo to cuva is the USA . and the DR is having tourist from all over the world just like cuva or any other country in the whole world. Cuva is not the only competitor, all country in the planet is a competitor in the tourism industry, so get that in your head, the DR is where it is now because is a beutyfull cuontry withh happy people not because other country have a diferent political system.

while every body is rolling along in high clover and enjoying the good life,I would like to remind you how quickly it can change..... it was at this time of the year when Eastern airlines went under some years ago...... The caribbean high life turned south in one day if you were in tourism.......waking up in Fredriksted the morning after Hugo in 89..... St Croix has never been the same.....in those days Brugal even made rum there for the U.S. market.....another Banco mistako/banninter god forbid in D.R...A string of scandals like phony wedding bad publicity....... the point one single piece of bad luck can change a rosy outlook overnight....work harder and be vigilant....we are not just going to be handed this money

My dear mr. Basta,
No American would put up with the crap in Cuba along with the non existant infrastructure to provide for an large increase in tourism.

Heck I have a hard time understanding why Americans are coming here let alone a country who has jailed everyone that disagreed with their politics and are scared to talk to foreigners for fear of being arrested by the secret police.

10 years ago there were NO Americans here in the DR as tourists. The planes were filled with returning Dominicans and Cuba was struggling. It isn't even competition! The Dominicans won't be vacationing in Cuba and after the few people try Cuba they wont return! I didn't and wouldn't although I got to see it before Castro Croaked which was the reason I went to begin with.

escott..you are correct about the far inferior level of tourism in Cuba......rubber chicken all inclusives and drink till you puke all inclusives do not a tourism market make.......however as you say" to see the tropical gulag before it changes" is one of the main motivations to go.........After it changes it takes a long time to build golf courses and the things that we are now marketing here in D.R.......but the change will happen and Cuba will be a formidable competitor if not the leader in this market .....HOW MANY YEARS ?

Here are some facts and unfortunately Cuba not doing so well.

As for the Caribbean islands, results varied
sharply in 2006, due to a number of factors – e.g. whether they were damaged by the hurricanes of 2005
and/or whether they were able to attract new airline services. Among the most visited islands, there was very
positive growth in arrivals for Jamaica (+13%) and the Dominican Republic (+7%), but not for Cuba (-5%).
Results from Central American countries were on the whole very favourable. El Salvador (+17%), Guatemala
(+14%), Honduras (+10%) and Panama (+20%) all reported double-digit increases. Economic growth in

I've seen how the tourism industry is growing in the D.R. Everytime I visit, I spend at least a week in one of the nice resorts in Punta Cana. I see how more hotels are been built all over the area. However, I only see a relatively small amount of the generated money going to the local economy.
I think the foreign corporations who own the hotels and resorts have an unfair economic agreement with the government. They need to give more to the local economy in the form of upper management jobs, community events, land preservation, etc.
