SANTO DOMINGO.- The fare to ride the Santo Domingo Metro will cost from 15  to 20 pesos and it’s users won’t be allowed to consume foods, spirits, smoke and not even chew gum, said Transport Office (Opret) director Diandino Peña today.

He said the start of normal operations is still many months way. "We are working in some processes to get it commercially operational before the end of 2008," and won’t allow vendors and scroungers, “to convert the stations into ghettos.”

President Leonel Fernandez will board the train together with legislators and other officials at the station in front of the Congress building, after his speech before the National Assembly, and ride it until the final stop at Villa Mella, he said.

Yesterday technicians from Spain, France and Germany conducted a test run to certify if it’s ready for the chief executive’s ride. "The Spanish technicians assured president Fernandez he can ride it without any concerns.

The official said they the country already has a modern, safe transport system, built in record time. He said the Metro’s electrical energy will come from 19 units of its own, nine of which are already installed, and will also be fed with lines from the Itabo, EG-Haina and Palamara plants.

"This transport system will benefit the environment because it will lower pollution and will also bring a new culture; it will promote coexistence, integration, because to the users will be instructed on norms in the Metro," he said in a interview for ColorVision, Channel 9.

“In the short term this is going to get people to understand that shouldn’t doodle the walls of its stations, shouldn’t smoke nor throw cigarette butts on the floor, shuldnt eat meals in the train nor chew Chiclets, because they’ll understand that this medium will benefit their community," Peña said.

I was inititally against this project for a number of reasons but now that it's a reality I wish it well and hope I it will becomes conducive for the future growth of the capital. As for ushering in a new culture of civility that's preposterous. That kind of change can only begin in the classrooms of the Dominican Republic, not on a subway platform. Get a clue Mr. Peña.

Last time I checked there are informal vendors in almost every street of every mid-sized town or bigger. Does this mean the DR is a giant ghetto? If that is so, the surroundings of the government buildings are the most ghetto something can get to, although there it is "permitted" :P

I don't know about any of you, but that last time I checked a great deal of civility and culture was taught at home by your parents. No saying that one can learn it from a book at school, but home is where everything starts.

How does he arrives at this figures of RD$20 pesos w/o knowing how many people are to ride the METRO? The cost per kwhr, the highest in all LA ,unless it is a fact that it is to be subsidiced by the central gvt.80/20.If that is the case am all for it.

As to the 19 units of its own he is talking about silicone rectifiers within. Not generators since it is to be fed AC from Itabo,Palamara and EG-Haina power plants, total of 3 for the METRO .What is left for the nationl district, ilumination as well as the industrial sector? ,but again i guess it does not matter as long as we get the METRO going.

I wish this so call engineers were more open as to what the DR people are getting for their money.I have not seen any technical data published yet as well as the cost. I hope it is not a white elephant. Also the maintanance cost is a must and a factor.

Also taking into account the guarantee on all purchased equipment for the METRO and the cost to train the nationals and for how long?

The metro will have it's own electic sources that will not depend on lighting from the nearby neighborhoods. So even if the lights go out, the metro will run; even if one of the plants stop working, they will have back ups.
