Algiers.-  The Algerian State fuels company Sonatrach confirmed it has reached an agreement to build a hybrid electrical power plant in the Dominican Republic. The US$200 million plant will use solar energy and natural gas to produce 150 megawatts.

The agreement, signed on January 31, includes construction of a liquid natural gas terminal, re-gasification units and other technologies based on natural gas for use in the future plant.

The contract represents one more step in the development of Sonatrach’s activities abroad, with operations in Europe (Spain, United Kingdom), in Africa (Libya, Mauritania and Mali) and in Latin America (Peru).

The president of the company, Mohamed Meziane, said until 2015 nearly 30 percent of its business volume will come from abroad.

Fine, now what is the time frame for construction, what are the details of the contract, where will the plant facillities be located, how many Dominicans will be employed during construction and afterwards.
Will thecontract include the conditions of the infamous "Madrid Accord" or will the government merely pay for the electricity used instead of having to pay for "installed capacity"???
These are questions which must be answered by the government in order to maintain it's position of "transparancy".
In addition, if Leonel doesn't win the upcoming election, will the plant be built anyway???Or, will it go the way of the many other "Uncompleted Projects" which scatter the countryside likethe hospitals, schools and roadways which were started by one Administration andlaid aside by the one following.
Think of the BILLIONS of pesos wasted by such reluctance, inefficiencies and GROSS NEGLECT.

I like the fact that energy is not dependant on a great power. Algeria is a modest country with a decent economy who would not use energy politics on a little country like the DR.

Carlos Franco : Don't kid yourself once they find a fool they will use it to the most ALGERIA is not
diferent from the big power countries since it is part of the capitalist world..
you are paying ,US$200 mn for only 150 MW of power on demand or capacity only? like TB
says and i conccur with his idea above .Where? When? How? No plans in effect nor do they stipulated DR employment now and afterward. It is very easy to bring their own people after,

We are still dependant on fossil fuel, for that matter beef up "ANDREAS "and the existing power plants. 50% of which needs repairs or don't have the fuel for them.

It is time they go for clean energy and something they have in abundance like sun 300 days wind
and hydro. The proof of it ,look how much power was lost at TAVERA by not adding more turbines and generators by the 6 spill tunnels if it needs to divert the water once it is droped..
I would suggest revamping TAVERA to divert the flow.
