Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic's leading brand, Brugal, was bought by the maker of Famous Grouse whisky for more than RD$996 million (£200 million) (US$292 million), or an 83 percent majority stake, said the newspaper The Scotsman today.

It reports that Brugal’s new majority owner, Edrington, makes a foray into the rum market with Dominican Republic's best-selling rum, “it is Edrington's first foray into drinks of other brand than whisky since it laid out plans for expansion in its annual report two years ago.”

It said the whisky maker is looking to boost Brugal's presence internationally, including potentially introducing it into the UK. The brand is already on sale in a number of European markets, including Spain and Italy.

"Rum is one of the most exciting drinks within the spirits industry and has very high growth potential. It fits very well with our existing Scotch whisky brands”, he said, quoted by The Scotsman.

Brugal’s market share is around 80 percent, ahead of other leading traditional brands such as Barceló and Bermudez.

Just curious, but according to the numbers, RD$996 million, wouldn't that make it about $30 some-odd million dollars (U.S.)? Or is it possible that the peso amount is incorrect?

Where are DR goverment business sale taxes ? Just a reminder !!!

New amount published on this sale!!! Actual US$292,000,000// 83% shares , for the Brugal CO./ Thats what they say ???

My earlier quote:
I do remember the outcry of Mr. Bengoa, shouting to Verizon Corp. for DR’s taxes and not to say late Shell Co. (DR’s interest bias). I’m pretty sure Brugal Co. stocks holders will disagree with me if you key at least 15% in taxes for their 65% business sale taking in consideration your US$ 900 M. number (I read it was around the US$500,000,000). DR‘s internal revenue office should be collecting about US$135,000,000. By the way, which is a good chunck of cash. But not to say, that the US$ purchase amount will never enter DR’s financial system.

Its everyone fleeing the Island ?

Mr. gouletcolonial, I don't disagree with your number.

I'm trying to uncover their lies, typical of any business with capital above US$20.00

After all this is what (they) call business not shoplifting.
