Washington.– From the fallout over the subprime disaster to the credit crisis to rising gas prices to unease on Wall Street, the US economy looks increasingly shaky and possibly on the brink of a recession.

On Friday the Federal Reserve, looking to head off a financial crisis, implemented a dramatic rescue of faltering Wall St. giant Bear Stearns. The Washington Post reports:

The Federal Reserve took the extraordinary step yesterday of providing emergency funding to one of Wall Street's venerable firms, Bear Stearns, after it ran out of cash to repay its lenders.

The Fed used a little-known power it last exercised in the 1960s to stem a run on Bear Stearns that could have sent multibillion-dollar losses cascading across the world financial system, causing more failures on Wall Street and threatening to choke off global economic growth.[...]

Critics characterized the Fed's move as a bailout that inappropriately intrudes on the free market and could lead banks to keep taking risks like those that imperiled Bear Stearns. Other analysts said the action was necessary, given the precarious state of world financial markets.

"We're on a knife's edge," said Eugene White, an economics professor at Rutgers University who studies financial crises. "The danger is if people's confidence is lost in a place like Bear Stearns, no one will lend to anybody."

The Bear Stearns bailout failed to stabilize Wall St., with the market tumbling Friday, the AP notes:

Wall Street plunged anew Friday after a near meltdown at Bear Stearns Cos. handed investors the unwelcome confirmation that the credit market's troubles are far from over. Word that the investment bank needed rescuing touched off a wave of selling that left each of the major indexes down more than 1.5 percent on the day; the Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 200 points.

In other words, the USA needs welfare only for the rich, but not for the poor.

Most OR ALL of the housing, dining, entertainment, and traveling/transportation expenses of (1) US bourgeoisie, (2) many mid layers of the middle class and (3) most upper layers of the middle class are paid for by stupid US taxpayers through tax deductible expense accounts which scumy degenerates and slimy, two-faced cheerleaders of US bourgeoisie don't even consider to be "welfare" for the "rich" or for anybody else.

"The bourgeoisie and most of the middle class deserve expense accounts that take care of their cost of living at the expense of the taxpayers. That's not welfare, that's capitalism."

A pie can only feed as many as there are pieces. The more it's cut the smaller the pieces.... The U.S has been printing money at the feed barrel of the Federal Reserve since the FR's formation. The principal held by both ''corporations'' being that future generations will pay the cost should they mis-manage. U.S capitalizm / greed being alive and well, every monies based institution/speculator hopped on board for the ride. As a result of their failures, the poor and middle classes fm every nation will be made to pay for generations to come.

Sounds like Lio-nel Fernadez's financial strategy for DR so he and his PLD can get reelected.

Short term gains: Investments in the METRO and other boondoggles for pure electioneering purposes!

Leading to;

Long term pain for the Dominican masses: borrowing more and more money to pay for these electioneering projects, forcing extraordinary tax burdens on the public and business to pay for these public relations gimmicks and then resulting in decreasing education and basic health care creating regressive social development.

But just like the US economy's chickens are coming home to roost and so will the Dominicans, if the PLD and Lio-nel Fernadez are given another four years to pillage. And that you can take to the Bank, pardon the pun!

Couple of weeks ago, Bear Stearn sold for $150 a share. Friday, a share closed at about $30. Today, it opened at $3.

If you think that the Latin American bourgeoisie, regional central banks, and big capitalist financial institutions in the private sector south of the border are not in Bear on both the equity and debt side, you should think again.

There are a lot of losers.

US dollar at the moment seem to be holding around $1.5710 against the Euro.

The world bourgeoisie looks afraid.

The US bourgeois regime, through the FED and US Treasury, is talking up and sweet talking confidence in the financial sector of the US capitalism.

The FED gave JPMorgan a $30 billion handout over the weekend to buy Bear. Plenty of welfare for the rich.

The FED shores up the confidence of the US bourgeoisie by printing billions and billions of dollars and exchanging these dollars for worthless subprime mortagage-backed securities held by technically insolvent investment banks.

Will the FED policy solve or postpone the financial crisis?

The FED today cut the funds rate 75 basis points after it yesterday gave billion-dollar handouts to Wall Street's uppercrust.

Naturally, the Dow leaps over 400 points.

But there are still trillions of dollars of flim-flam mortgage-backed securities carrying valuations of zero in a lot of key portfolios.

Who got the money out of the rip off?

Who will pay for the rip off?

It was just a year ago, when bourgeois apologists adamantly argued that there weren't any holes in the capitalist dike. "The embankment is sound," they argued.

Now, they have somewhat backed off from this lie.

Now, they say that bourgeois state, at least, can run around quickly and stick its fingers into various holes in the dikes as they appear. There appears to be no confidence in the ability of the capitalist market to stick its fingers into the holes of the dike to solve problems. The lassiz faire crowd want and demand action from the bourgeois state to prop up the failed market.

What will be the next position of the bourgeois apologists fall back on?
