Adds EGE Haina pledge to issue statement.
SANTO DOMINGO.- An agreement has been signed to build and operate a $500 million coal power plant in the Dominican Republic’s industrial facility at Haina, said Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) on Friday, reported by Reuters.
It said the 240,000 kilowatts coal plant would replace a plant currently operated on fuel oil, said Reuters quoting a statement from the state-run energy company. “The agreement with Dominican Republic's largest power operator, Haina, comes as the country aims to use more coal for power generation due to soaring global oil prices, KEPCO added.”
Reuters said construction is expected to begin next year, and conclude by 2011.
In Santo Domingo, EGE Haina public relations manager Marta Fernandez, contacted by phone Friday afternoon, said the company will issue a statement on Monday.

It will go back to South Korea when they find a cable long enough.......... logical no

So how many years wil it be before we finish paying back the Koreans for there generosity on this project, that they will build, and than also OPERATE!!!!!!...Hmmmm.
This is what we get when the educational system in DR, cannot compete with the other countries educational system & professionals, we have to keep depending on someone else.

Basically, that's the problem. Dominican business owner's don't want to invest in their people. They prefer exploiting there fellow Dominican with low wages while benefiting from a huge prrofit margin. Dominicans business owners don't want to invest in these projects and that's part of the reason why we out-source to other. THe other reason is the technical advacement and expertise these countries have which are superior to DR.
If the business mindset in DR change a bit more, then Dominican investors and business ownerw would invest more in these projects.

Just out of curiosity, does this plant replace the two that were to be built in Azua and Manzanillo by the Chinese Company?
The legislators passed a 30 billion US$ guarantee for that company so they could "get the financing required" to build those plants. Was that money eaten up by the"commissions" involved (?) or is it in abeyance indefinately since it now has no place to go.
I might add that the Chinese were going to transplant two of their old, dirty plants into the DR, Does this mean that theKoreans have use of themore advanced technlogy for reducing the polution derived from burning coal? Have "Environmental Impact Studies" been performed? What will be the emission quotient of this plant?
Need a lot of answers to a lot of questions, here.

The cost woul had been the same. at US$1,200 millions for 600 MW.
What they should do is stay away from the C02 produced by tis high sulphur plants if they want to help out the enviroment and compete in tourism..How can they build anyting with out open bidds? Efficienssy is a factor and so is the cost as well as the ambient.

Coal is the largest single source of fuel for the generation of electricity world-wide, as well as the largest world-wide source of carbon dioxide emissions, slightly ahead of petroleum and about double that of natural gas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal#Environmental_effectsThere are a number of adverse environmental effects of coal mining and burning.
These effects include:
release of carbon dioxide and methane, both of which are greenhouse gases
waste products including uranium, thorium, and other heavy metals
acid rain
interference with groundwater and water table levels
impact of water use on flows of rivers and consequential impact on other land-uses
dust nuisance
subsidence above tunnels, sometimes damaging infrastructure
rendering land unfit for other uses.

If foreign investors come to the DR to invest, then that's considered bad by our amazing commie friends. If our business people either don't have the resources or the vision to make such investment, then they're just exploiting their own people....niiice. Great logic you have there. Also, it would be sooo profitable for a korean company to come to the other side of the world to the DR, invest $500 million in a coal plant and then send that energy back to korea, either by cable or yola, your choice. I have often wondered if the "communist-leaning" segment of the world population hasever considered what their "income" would DROP to if their economic plan were to be put into operation.
I don't think they have the intelligence, nor themath capability to figure that out.

actually, CowboyUp, there are people on this forum who have opinions, which , even if incorrect, are said or written with good intent. i find it unsettling when people take a dismissive approach to what other people have to say. if you look at the chronology of my posts, you will notice that i always ask people for the source of their information, because we can all learn from each other. i have requested from other osters more book and article titles than anyone else, because every day we learn something new. so i get disturbed when someone offers an opinion and the response from another poster is ,to paraphrase, ¨if you know so much, why don´t you run the country?¨.i do not find that to be a civil and apropriate response to someone who is simply proffering an opinion. the preponderant majority of posters are well intentioned folks looking for a `civil and pleasant discouse with others. as to Goulet, with the passage of time you will realise that not only is he not entertaining
