Santo Domingo.- since Dominican Republic regained the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Category One status, the lack pilots in the country has formed airlines to contract foreign pilots for international flights.

The affirmation is from Pedro Domínguez, head of the Dominican Pilots Association. He said that the demand is higher than the supply as there aren’t enough pilots to meet it.

Dominguez’s statement comes just months before the country’s only airline, Air Dominicana, is scheduled to begin flight operations to Europe.

"Lie-onel Fernandez" a man who builds an electric powered METRO in a country where the average person cannot' keep a little bulb on for more than a few hours.

I must give it to "Lie-onel” Fernandez he is consistent in his management.

He mismanaged Noel and several weeks later he mismanaged Olga.

He ordered the building of a METRO which has to be run by foreigners because we have no qualified Dominicans.

Now he reactivates and airline to be flown by foreign pilots because we do not have enough Dominican pilots.

He is creating jobs, unfortunately they are not for Dominicans.

Flight training is expensive, more than $10,000 to earn a pilot license, and 4 to 8 times that amount to buy and support a light plane, suffice to say only a few people in DR are able to do this. In other countries, commercial pilots come largely from the military, the FAD having few fixed wing aircraft, creates few surplus pilots.

Zak the DR isn't the only country having problems with pilots. The biggest problem is that most of the aging U.S. pilots came from the Vietnam and post Vietnam War era. These pilots are reaching retirement age 62. The Government has been considering raising the age to 65 because of the demand for pilots. In addition what compounds the problem is that the bulk of these pilots will be retiring all within a 5-8 years period. A pilot commercial license is prohibitively expensive. Even with as I say this, U.S. schools cannot produce pilots fast enough to meet the demand.

......Another problem with DR is that once you are certified in the U.S. by the FAA the DR requires you to get Certification in the DR as well. You would think, if I hold a U.S FAA commercial Pilot IFR certification, that it would be valid in the DR. Not so, (unless you bribe someone) You have to take written and practical test as well. Finally, if it is prohibitively expensive in the U.S imagine DR.

Metro or no Metro.
