SANTO DOMINGO.- The difficulties and delays by the mills in dispatching rice at 12 pesos per pound to wholesalers and retailers prevents its reaching colmados and small supermarkets on time, newspaper Diario Libre says.

Retailers say the Dominican Rice Factories Association (Ada) doesn’t have sufficient grain, and instead gathers it now.

Daniel Peña president of the wholesalers Association (Amaprosado); Julian Parra, of the market retailers and Jovanny Leyba, of the store retailers, asked the millers to speed up rice deliveries.

"If rice isn’t available in the colmados it’s because the millers have placed unnecessary proceedings that don’t benefit the authorities’ plan," to sell rice at 12 pesos, kidney beans at 23, eggs at three pesos and chicken at 25 per pound, they said.

They said in some cases, despite  taking checks to the factories to pay the quotas reached by consensus, they are not paid the required attention and go into bureaucratic procedures that makes it difficult to receive the product.

Same as with Cafta. A way is found to lower prices and the vendors find a way to keep the prices as high as ever and keep the extra money for themselves instead of passing the savings along to the consumer.

CAFTA-DR what a mess this is...the real results of this agreement will be felt down the line, when the DR will not be able to produce anything, because of subsidized productsz from the US entering the country but no benefit. The only benefit was to the greedy politicians who got paid by the US government to raise their handsto approve this agreement. AN AGREEMENT THAT WAS PASSED IN THE US CONGRESS BY 2 VOTES.

What a bunch of BS, it isn't CAFTA fault that the greedy corrupt Dominicans have high prices on Rice that is GROWN HERE. How rediculous!

US doesn't pay Dominican Polititians to vote in any way. Dominican Polititians come out of the womb trying to screw the rest of their people. Corrupt from the Police, Judges, Polititians right down to the DIRTBAG motoconcho.

DR won't be able to produce anything because they are STUPID to put up with their government.

My point was not that the food price problem is related to Cafta. My point was that concessions have been given to producers to allow them to charge less and make the same profit as before. Instead, however, the producers have chosen to put the aid they are receiving into their own pockets to increase their profits, rather than passing the savings on to the consumer. This is the same thing that has happened with Cafta. The prices should have been reduced due to the reduction in duties paid, but instead, the importers have kept that money for themselves.

You have to be pretty naive if you believe that the price of rice in DR has anything to do with CAFTA or the ever mounting Dominican politician corruption.

It has everything to do with the global commodity being priced higher through both speculation and the geniuses that decided to make corn into ethanol.
