SANTO DOMINGO.-The new carrier Air Dominicana will begin operations May 2, with its fleet’s first airplane ready; a 737-A, already identified with the Dominican flag’s colors, red, white and blue.

Newspaper Diario Libre reports that the Dominican State’s share in the new airline of US$10 million initial capital is 40 percent, and the Spanish capital is 32 percent.

The cost of the airplane is 60 million dollars and has a range of eight hours of flight.

The airline will begin flights from Punta Cana International Airport (east), considered the Caribbean region’s top tourism destination.

CAPITAL BREAKDOWN

Dominican State’s ............................................. 40 %

Spanish (either state or private bourgeois)....32%

Others (or whoever) .............................................28%

So, as long as things stay serene, Leonel will control the board and management. But if squabbling erupts, the Spanish, whoever they are, and the "others," whoever they are, may combine to takover the airline.

An eruption of severe squabbling among stakeholders seems unlikely unless the airline loses or makes a lot of money.

Given the financial fragility of the big imperialist airlines, air service to the DR's tourist spots is uncertain.

But this move, namely, starting a little airline, increases the fragility of the imperialist competitors and promises to nibble away on the market share of the majors.

The majors probably breakout in violent cussing when the topic of the little airline arises, as the majors consult with high-powered bankruptcy lawyers.

Here we go again...another "Dominicana de Aviacion". Why don't they just band together and form a transnational airline...P.R., D.R., Cuba, V.I., the Netherlands Antilles, and some of the others?

If it's run anything like European airlines then it may have a future. After all, despite high fuel costs these days, most of the airlines going belly up and finding it harder and harder to compete are publicly-traded US airlines that in order to enhance shareholder ROI continually cut expenses (in the wrong places) so that they can mitigate their losses. If CEO salaries would get a much-needed overhaul, they'd retain enough capital in the business to absorb losses. This little start-up may just surprise everyone so don't count it out just yet. The problem with the previous government-run national airline was simply poor management. You can't keep taking while not producing. That's called a deficit. Previous governments just drained it out of existence as they did many public industries. I trust the PLD has taken notice to that.
