SANTO DOMINGO.- The company Globasol will spend up to 30 million dollars to build a biodiesel plant in Azua province (south) to supply the group Globalia’s hotel chain, said its biofuels division chief yesterday.
Jose Vicente Galindo said his company, founded in 2005, will begin construction of the plant in July, in 120,000 square meters of land, near Azua’s Puerto Viejo port. He said construction will last between 12 to 15 months and is expected to be operating next year.
Globasol said it will produce 60,000 tons of biofuel annually (68.1 million liters, 18 million gallons) from the plant jatropha, starting September 2009. The project includes construction of “ecovillages,” where the workers, farmers and their families will live.

Jatropha's sap is a skin irritant, and ingesting three untreated seeds can kill a person.
In 2005 Western Australia banned the plant as invasive and highly toxic to people and animals.
Haitians and poor Dominicans will probably catch hellishly capitalist exploitation on these plantations and in these plants in Azua province.
And these proposed "“ecovillages,” or, more correctly, the slave quarters "where the workers, farmers and their families will live" [under armed guards] will be conveniently overlooked or ignored by the capitalist media and reactionary "democratic" bourgeois state under Leonel, both pillars of bourgeois "democracy."
Since Jatropha is so toxic, it's likely a cheaper raw material for making ethanol [diesel in this case] than even bagasse [crushed sugarcane refuse from sugar making] or sugarcane, both of which exist in abundance in the DR and both are widely used for ethanol production in Brazil.

Goldman Sachs recently cited Jatropha curcas as one of the best candidates for future biodiesel production. However, despite its abundance and use as an oil and reclamation plant, none of the Jatropha species have been properly domesticated and, as a result, its productivity is variable, and the long-term impact of its large-scale use on soil quality and the environment is unknown.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JatrophaSo, politely speaking, the Azua province is something of Goldman Sach's guinea pig.
The DR bourgeoisie couldn't be more delighted "Just think, Goldman Sachs, the largest investment bankers in the world with capital under management, favors the Azua province as its prime guinea pig for a cutting edge form of capitalist exploitation involving toxic plants. I'm gonna tell my broker to buy a 1000 shares in the new company Globasol because I want get in on the ground floor."

Globasol, the Madrid-based company, was created in 2005 by a group of investors led by the Hidalgo family – owners of Globalia Corporación Empresarial (www.globalia.com). Their main aim is to promote sustainable development in Spain and in particular renewable energy. Globasol builds facilities to the highest quality standards, attracting private capital and thus stimulating the economies of the regions in which it is active.
The General Director of the Globalia group, Javier Hidalgo, stated: “We will continue to invest in the energy and sustainable tourism sectors in Murcia. We see solar energy as the best way to promote sustainable energy production, but will also make sure we treat the environment responsibly in everything that we do”.
http://www.econcern.com/index.php....task=view&id=27&Itemid=68[So, their "main aim" is not to promote unsustainable toxic production in the DR. Isn't that nice of them? Thank God. And, also, thank the Nazarene.]

It's either that or it's only this guy -- Juan Jose Hidalgo, the billionaire.
Yes, he has his boards of directors to deal with, but they are mostly controlled by him or by his family which claims "nobility" whatever that is.
I don't know whether this guy belongs to the reactionary or liberal wing of the Spanish bourgeoisie. Once I find out, then he's easy to read.
Some Spanish capitalists support only people like Jose Maria Anzar, the reactionary animal.
But other capitalists support only people like José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, mild-mannered bourgeois liberal.
Then there is the twilight zone of capitalists who support everybody ... at the same time.
So, it's sometimes hard to find out things.

Some of my more rigid Marxist-Leninist brethren reject equally all bourgeois leaders with the same degree of categorical contempt.
I am somewhat flexible on this question.
I much prefer ... any day of the week ... a mild-mannered bourgeois liberal over a reactionary animal.
In the current DR presidential race, I even prefer a reactionary bourgeois who shows, at least, some regard for sovereignty over another reactionary whose elixir of life is abject submission to US imperialism.
I know it's not much of a choice.
Hence, my brethren believe that I have succumbed to compromise, but I see myself as creative.
