SANTO DOMINGO.- National Energy Commission (CNE) president Arístides Fernandez Zucco slated the inaugural of the first station to sell natural gas for cars in the next few days, as part of the Government’s policy toward efficiency and to save fuel.

Fernandez, accompanied by Ricardo Canalda, president of Linea Clave Internacional, the company that sells natural gas to the country’s industries, said the station will be located in the place known as Los Tres Ojos, on Las America highway, which will operate as a pilot project to supply the fuel to vehicles.

The executives spoke during an educational tour for students of the Carol Morgan School of the facilities of the companies AES Andrés, Linea Clave Internacional and Fluitecnik S.A., organized by the CNE.

actually, time2rize, the conversion kits cost upward of 2500 us dollars, if done properly.it is not the simple conversion as is seen in the propane cars. the tanks ,etc, are of special manufacture in the interest of safety. the fear i have is that peole will resort to makeshift conversions and drive around in lethal time bombs. this will be a test case for the government to enforce some sort of regulation regarding safety standards.

I have haerd that it costs arounf $25,000 pesos if it is $2500.00 US , better to buy amore economical car. Or take the Metro LOL!

All the taxis use them I have not heard of one disaster resulting from the use of these.

I am sure there have been some isolated incidents but nothing yet.. but agreed a bad installation could be very dangerous.

2500 us dollars !!!!!!!!!! So i guess, only the rich will have it installed. I was going to wait till Natural Gas stations were open, around my area, to have it than installed on my vehicle.

But i think, i will just go ahead, an installed the Propane Kit instead, which properly installed cost about $400 US Thanks dreadlocks

you are welcome, time2rize. i spoke at length with a company in california which has been doing these conversions for many years, and they assured me that it was a very bad idea to take shortcuts in this conversion, as the results could be less than lovely!

Many people here have conversion kits at a lower price. I can't speak about the quality and safety, but the truth is that you don't hear about accidents happening.

I guess that the 'good' conversion kits will be bought by people with expensive cars, which don't wan't to spend so much on gasoline.

DaniDr, where do you mean when you say that there are cheaper kits available? are you speaking of the dominican republic? maybe you have not heard of any accidents, because nobody has been using them as yet. to my knowledge, natural gas is not yet available for passenger cars.

Sorry for the confusion. It was propane or what is called here GLP. I wasn't aware that they were different technologies.

They use propane and have been for years they fill up the cars at the same places everyone fills up their "tankes"

I didn't read close enough but they are different hopefully they will subsidize the cost if the test goes well.

when i as in santiago.. a conversion to only propane was about 300 dollars.. checking in the states.. the propane/gas conversion was about $1200 for six cyl.
i think it is great to see the government using alternative energy, the metro, road improvements.

natural gas is dangerous, more so then the Propan version... they make cars already set up to take propane and our Natural gas. Just like the e85 cars... But for some reason I don't see them at any auto dealership... they should be promote it to Dominicans that want to move to DR

chiiaxin, please tell me which company makes cars which run on propane or natural gas. i have always been under the impression that these were all retrofit kits, but i am willing to stand corrected.
