Construction costs, just like this skyscraper, reach for the heavens over Santo Domingo.
Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO.- Housing Builders and Promoters Association (ACOPROVI) president Jaime González said the cost of construction materials has jumped around 25 percent in the last 30 days; housing sales fell 50 percent in March and April and the price of residences rose around 15 percent last month.

He blamed the fall in sales and rising costs on expectations from the elections. "The costs have skyrocketed and we fear there’s no one to buy the units from us."

González said the industry is greatly concerned with what’s going to happen with construction when elections conclude and that there’s fear costs would skyrocket again. "The price of construction materials shouldn’t have to rise, more increases make no sense any longer."

Elections are elections...that will never help much of anything.

Construction cost will rise no matter who's the President in DR or any country in the world, and especially now when DR is having a small construction boom. The material suppliers will ride the boom also and raise there prices, you can't blame them for that.

The home buyers just have to be patient intill things settle or developers become desparate.

Strange that an Economist open first his mouth with his common blabbering, speaking the same stupidities, and do not stop to figure out how things are nowdays in the world with the prices of the barrel of oil at US$120.00 DOLLARS, and if that Economist is not able to think, those prices will eventually affect all that is built, made with the impulse of energy created by crude oil derivatives like fuel oil, gas oil, gasoline, oils, greases, then he doesn't know nothing at all,
and not the PLD, not the PRD, not the PRSC, and certainly not the Guillermo Moreno candidate is going to change that at all no matter what he does, which in the end, will be the same that all the others do, or he will not stay in power one single year, interests of the people who put presidents in power are too huge to ignore, and they are the ones who give the money for campaigns most of the time, if not, remember Juan Bosch please. Prices of oil today, are the worst enemy of any government.

"Construction materials ... jumped around 25 percent in the last 30 days; housing sales fell 50 percent in March and April and the price of residences rose around 15 percent last month," DT reports.

Those jumps and falls would be huge over the course of a whole year, not just over one or two months.

"The price of construction materials shouldn’t have to rise, more increases make no sense any longer," DT reports.

The "sense" is probably that US producers and distributors of construction materials are in seriously declining housing and contruction markets in the USA. So, they believe it is only fair and proper that the DR bear some of US losses through US price gouging.

Actually, the price of imported construction materials should have fallen because demand for the items has contracted in the USA due to the housing crisis.

As for the domestically produced items, these can likely claim rising oil and the falling dollar.

I agree with Dennis c due to oil increases everything has to go up,because the carriers are going to charge the customer the money they spent on gas trying to transport the goods, and no one can do anything about it not even the president. Is not on his hand to control this samething hapens with the food prices, the taxi also have to cover the money they spend on gas and any busines man would do the same to get back the money they are loosing on gas.

What is accurate?

Part of the headline reads:

"housing sales fall 15% in April"

Then in the text of the article it states "housing sales fell 50 percent in March and April"

Is it 15 or 50%?

Cappie garbage, think about this.

Is it the case that if a foreigner is bourgeois scum and pro-capitalist filth, he or she should move to the USA? What makes you think that only bourgeois scum and pro-capitalist filth are entitled to air their views in the USA?

Excreted cappie waste material, do you know where to go or must I tell you? If so in either case, read on.

Why are filthy rabble-rousers for the capitalist form of exploitation welcome by the reactionary slime of the USA, while people who speak the truth and defend lofty values are often invited to leave by the stinking and greasy US reactionaries, who fortunately are only one-third of the US population.

Slime and refuse of counterrevolution as well as the offal of bourgeois culture and landfills, if you love and worship bourgeois evil so much, why don't you go to hell.

Our amusing GC, in his total individuality, is something that is discharged violently from the bourgeois exhaust pipe. The smell of GC's gases is of course awful, but their loud sound is absolutely intolerable; you see ... his muffler is always falling off of him.

Why do prices rise, supplies and demands is the logical acceptable answers. All of the others factors are details which go along with the first answer. A construction boom is like a herd of cows giving milk, gallons upon gallons and them a surplus which should bring the price down but if we hide it we do the opposite. How big is the D.R. form the places of production to the distributers is not that great of a distance to justify continuos increases in materials. Nor do the makings of these materials justify increases. The problems are due to the abuses which are permited by business owners who are constantly looking to make the highest profits which they can. Since there are no regulations they do as they please. The Government is their prime customer so they buy it at the prices that they agree upon. The rest of the people who want to build or remodeled their homes are force to pay the current price. It's like a big Mafia, buy it or stayed as you are and this applies to everything.
