An exhibit of plants for biofuels in the Seminar.
BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic. - National Energy Commission (CNE) president Arístides Fernandez Zucco yesterday said that Dominican Republic has nearly 100,000 uncultivated hectares of land available with a potential to produce biofuels.
Fernandez Zucco said the Government works for the country to produce ethanol and biodiesel “at an industrial scale” this year, in view of the rise in oil prices.
He said the intention is to incorporate new crops and not replant existing ones in the northwest and southwest regions, suitable for biodiesel, and the east for ethanol. “Just the Dominican Agrarian Institute has more than 30,000 hectares available for these crops. Land which are marginal and which don’t require much water for an oily crop.”
Fernandez Zucco spoke on the topic as part of the 3rd Latin American and Caribbean Seminar on Biofuels inaugurated yesterday in the hotel Hamaca, activity which concludes today.

Warning to all, biofuels are one of the reasons why there is a world food crisis! Farmers are growing more food for fuel than for consumption creating supply problems and raising food prices. Say NO! to biofuels.

100,000 acres is not going to effect domestic food production, but caution must be implemented that more land is not added to the said number.

I believe that biodiesel in the DR will be produced with pine nuts, jatropha curcas and other non-food species, unless you eat pine nuts, then I guess you're in for more expensive nuts. Ethanol will be produced with sugar cane and it won't affect sugar production since all they need is the alcohol. They plan to produce ethanol and sugar at the same time. Also, they can use some of that alcohol to make rum and the bagasse that ramains to produce electricity for the mill. The food concern with ethanol come from ethanol made from corn in the US, which means more expensive corn and animal feed. Biofuels are the way to go for the DR, either that or imported oil at $200 a barrel...

Hugo Chávez is one of the big spokespersons against the production of biofuels. Aww, that's sooo cute and considerate! riiight, the thing is that his country is a big producer of petroleum and an OPEC member. He also has been pushing for more expensive oil for a while now. He has been calling $100 a barrel since before oil was $50, now he wants oil to reach $200 a barrel. I guess that's for the greater good of the poor people he claims to represent. Higher oil means everything goes up. Also, his country is not a big agricultural country. He knows that to ramain relevant internationally, he needs expensive oil, even to spend money "social" things at home and remain popular...otherwise, he would lose power.
