Santo Domingo.– Government officials say IKEA is opening its first Latin American store in the Dominican Republic next year.

According to a government news release, the discount furniture retailer will invest US$65 million in the outlet that is expected to open in early 2009.

President Leonel Fernandez said in a statement that he began negotiations three years ago during a trip to Spain. The outlet will be built in Santo Domingo.

Details about the size of the store are not available yet. The Swedish-based retailer sells easy-assembly furniture and housewares.

Great! The more, the merrier. Competition amongst the big chains is ultimately good for the consumer. A wider variety of choices and lower prices.

The company they need to bring to the Dominican Republic is Con Ed... I think that's a smarter idea. Then they need DEP out there for the water supply. These are the main two issues that need to be addressed & they haven't, at least not correctly.
