Few motorists can pay to fill up with gasoline.
Industry and Commerce decides to "wait until the spiraling bubble dissipates"
SANTO DOMINGO. – While the price of oil has skyrocketed as high as 125 dollars per barrel in just one week, the Industry and Commerce Ministry today announced that fuel prices will remain unchanged from Saturday, the 10th to Friday the 16th, day in which Dominican voters choose their next president.
Industry and Commerce said its decision aims to "wait until the spiraling bubble dissipates, which has been determining upward tendency for oil prices abroad."
During the week from May 10 to 16 a gallon of premium gasoline will still cost RD$188 and RD$176.10 for regular.
A gallon of regular diesel will cost RD$156.40 and premium diesel will sell for RD$160.80.
The gallon of subsidized propane gas costs RD$59.95 and the non-subsidized is RD$81.71.

Wait until the prices stabelize!!!! Who do they think they are lying to?????
That will just be another debt to pay for after the election by the children of the DR.
My god they must think everybody is stupid but the PLD.
Long live the corruption of the parties.

RD$188 pesos for a gallon of gas,
that is US$6.00 dollars for one damn gallon of gas, which bring us to probably to have one of the most expensive countries in the world paying for gas, even more expensive than all European countries.
Aren't we supossed to have some special prices from Venezuela in all oil subproducts?
the hell if I understand all of this, perhaps somebody else must look into all this.

Just who the heck is Jim Harrington???
are you Dominican at all?
From: United States
actually, DenisC, gasoline is more expensive in some european countries; in the UK, it is over 8 dollars. it is not the price which is the problem, it is the poor utilisation which causes the hurt. poorly tuned vehicles, with balding tires, front ends out of alignment, improper tire inflation, etc, contribute to upwards of 20% waste of fuels ingested into the internal combustion engine. sadly, we have no inspection protocols, for reasons known only to the politicians. so, rather than treat the disease with stern medicine, such as an irrevocable ban on cars which give less than a stated minimum miles per gallon, the government puts on theatrics such as this; they seek to cure cancer with an aspirin

The real question that should be asked, how much on May 17.... 200, 210 heck 220 pesos ? for gasoline.
Yes, we do get a 40% subsidy from Venezuela, but certain "government officials" pocket the change. Leonel calls that "progress". I laugh how they state that, they are freezing the price at $188 for one week, just so happens it's elections week..lol...

As I have said many times before, "Be careful what you wish for". We all want a government with great transparency. Could there be something that they could do at any time that is more transparent than this obvious attempt to make it seem as if they are addressing a serious problem in a serious way right before the election, when all it actually is is an attempt to get more votes. They already have mine, but only because there is no one else.

Not subsidy, but a discount and an alternative payment arrangement.
DR can pay 40% of its Petrocaribe oil purchases with bartered DR goods and services.
The Venezuelans want a part of the DR's livestock if the DR would only clean up the contaminations, especialy in beef and poultry.
In 2001, Dominican livestock included 187,000 goats and 106,000 sheep.
There were also about 2.1 million head of [tainted] cattle, 60% for beef and 40% for dairy.
The hog population was decimated by African swine fever, decreasing from 400,000 in 1978 to 20,000 in 1979; by 2001, however, it was 565,000.
[Tainted] Poultry is the main meat source because it is cheaper than beef or pork. Poultry production relies on imports of feed grain from the United States.
In 2001, 203,000 tons of poultry meat were produced, along with 71,000 tons of beef and 420,000 tons of milk.

Rather than sniveling over a lost export market in Haiti, why doesn't DR just spend the good piece of money necessary to clean up its livestock to meet international certifications standards.
The foreign exchange the DR would save from batering livestock for Venezuelan oil would be immense.
And the foreign exchange that the Venezuela would save from buying Dominican livestock with oil would also be immense.
[Of course, the US imperialists will be outraged that the Dominicans are smart enough and tough enough to go in and grab a part of the fabulously rich Venezuelan agricultural market from US imperialists. "You Dominicans should export livestock to Haiti, not to "our" Venezuela. You Dominicans better watch out.]
"But whose gonna pay for the livestock clean-up in the DR? Who? Not me. I ain't gonna spend my money cleaning up sick chickens and sick cows."

That would be a good, but difficult, move for Moreno.
Difficult because Obama's art in politics is playing the "truly" nice guy who just happens to be super-smart without appearing too nice or too smart.
Good because widespread display over character of candidates is an underlying and potentially determinative issue in Dominican politics.
Obama beat the difficulties in two ways. First, by a grueling schedule of campaigning in peoples' homes at small events, unnoticed by the media, all over USA, before he had name recognition and fundraising. Sometimes he would even spend the night in the homes of his hosts in Iowa or New Hampshire. When election season arrived he had a base, where the other Democratic Party contenders had only million dollar consultants.
Second, he listened to his drama coach.

Even with a good drama coach, it will still be difficult for Moreno to play "the 'truly' nice guy" because prosecutors, former prosecutors, and formers attorney generals don't come off as nice guys.
Look at Mark Spitzer.

Belial I like your breakdown of the oil/tainted meat situation. One solution would be if the industrialists behind all those animals organized and got this done by the government, by hook or crook.
Also re: Obama as Carter, look how it turned out for Carter in the end. The system doesn't like it if you do it that way.

Is easy to cheat the prople especially when the medias supports politician with the used of technical words. The add to that all the other words on how and what they need to do to the petroleon before it gets to the pumps and people formed lines to juice up their vehicles. The tendancy is that if the markets said something or suggets prior to doing most jump the wagon and act or react - raised it now and so the price goes up. There is no justification for the increases but for D.R. is a preparation of the I told you so and we gave you a break but now election is over and this is the new price. The thing is that where there is a need many will take advantages and exploit those with the needs. What a great government, freezing the price. We can go to the beach now, get everyone in the car, no, lets go to the river.
