The capital city looks a like cleaner as some of the garbage is now worth money.
SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic's emergence as a consumer country also makes a growing producer of waste, whose hundreds of tons daily ends up in containers mostly headed to China, instead of a trash dump.
In 2007 the Asian nation received 91.3 billion kilos of waste of a total of 303.1 billion exported to more than 40 countries.
Exports of recyclable materials to China reached 25 billion dollars just last year, most of it iron and steel, and of the 240 billion kilos exported, China received 152.4 billion.
Peian Zhao, of China’s Trade Office in the country, said trade between China and Dominican Republic have grown to 50 million dollars in the last few years. “China is a very populated country and that means a very gigantic market and its demand is also very great."
He said trade reached 613 million dollars in 2007, with China exporting 513 million, while Dominican Republic exported 100 million dollars to that country.
According to data from Chinese Customs, quoted by Zhao, Dominican exports to that nation were 3.15 million dollars in 2003; 15.6 million in 2004; 29.1 million in 2005, and 94.5 million in 2006.

On your many trips to DR when possible educate your family and friends of the benefits of not littering. If you have friends who have businesses, educate them on contributing to the social and natural environment.
Education, education, education.
it starts with you!
And so, my fellow Dominican, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

Think they might have a market for styrofoam containers? Some days around here...untill I clear my eys...it appears that it snowed along the side of the road!
Just today I was at a popular beachside restaurant...just meters away, behind some artisan shops were nothing but piles of plastic, styrofoam and god knows what. This was all in sight of beachwalkers and locals.
I find it odd...that in a country where they will sweep a floor to the point that mud shines...wear the whitest clothes in the dustiest conditions and groom themselves to fashion model perfection..they seem to think that as long as they cannot see the garbage they throw out...it is not a problem.
Goulet will not agree with me here...but that is one big difference between Cuba and the DR....the government there does educate thier people and takes responsability for keeping it's country as clean as possible.
Cheers

Mike I agree with you 100% on that one ...but there are many reasons one being fear the other the amount of packaging available to litter with in a non consumer society and yes probably education....Remember America and Europe were the same in the 50s when all this extra packaging came into existence .....Crime also in Cuba is profoundly lower as well ..but at what cost Mike

I agree with you that Cuba educates. They put people in RE-education camps for 8 months for tossing garbage in the street. Same thing for prostitutes after Castro decided not to sell his women for hard currency any longer.
Cuba, a real class act!

Education! My point exactly. Proves they are not educated. They just have a piece of paper they purchased or acquired by doing someone a favor.
Education is not just having a piece of paper. Education is broad, and encompassing and it never stops.
And so, my fellow Dominican, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
