The novel power plant.
Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Government inaugurated a plant to produce gas and electricity using farm refuse as raw material, which will contribute to reduce the use of propane gas and to lower the electric bill.

A joint initiative of the Industry and Commerce Ministry (SEIC), the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD) and the company Koar Energy Resources, the plant operates in Bonao’s (central) Los Maestros district and is considered the first of its type in Latin America.

Their promoters said the plant will supply cooking gas to 288 houses, whereas the surplus will serve to generate energy which could be supplied to the Edenorte electricity distributing company.  It will use husks from rice, coffee and cacao, oil palm and banana plants and other crops.

Senior officials and company executives took part in the inaugural of the plant, which Koar said will benefit farmers who’ll sell the raw material, housewives and the electricity industry, with an economic, non-polluting power plant to help the environment.

This is a venture that the government and/or private industries could take advantage of instead of selling the "garbage and other refuse" to China as is reported in another article on these pages.
Too many times, foreign and Dominican investors allow opportunities to slip through their hands when seeking solutions to the problems facing this nation.
Granted, some of these opportunities don't seem to have the"return on investment" that businesses seek, so they don't bother to explore these opportunities to their fullest. however, with the rising prices of petroleum being significantly affecting the economy, such a venture could very well be economically worthwhile as a substitute for the production vehicle of electrical power and cooking gasses.
Something to think about and act upon, isn't it???

Hurray for Greening up DR!!! Hey this could turn into something good. Maybe their will be an agriculture boom. We could create our own energy. Cars will be electric or will run on raw materials in the future. This could be awesome!!

THIS IS PROMISING, I am using the same technology to generate power through a honda generator with a chineese "gas plant " it's about the size of an average refrigerator and is very efficiant , turning coconut husk and wood mulch into fuel for any internal combustion engine, only an inexpensive adapter kit , you can still use regular gas if you choose with a coupl of valves, This is really neat and could be used for vehicles as well.

pappa...forget vehicles...those f$%&ing transporte mafiosos deserve whatever they get. The real question is where can I get one? Where do I get the deet's?? Why don't you secure the rights??? And will it produce enough energy to keep my beer cold????

coconut husks you say?!? I s'pose one could put nearly any organic material inside and it would run?!? I'm guessing that some of our friends from the North Coast then could masturbate inside the thing and keep it running since they came to this country thinking that third world girls had no standards only to discover...oooh, turns out women recognize a chump no matter what passport he is carrying.

Sir it makes 'producer gas' like the 'gasworks' of the 19th century, It can be compressed like CNG or propane but in the simple set ups it is produced by the engines suction cyclyng the combustion proscess / water filtering. A unit set on a grand scale is very efficiant and they are in wide use in India. Durring WWII this was how vehicles were powered in Northern Europe.Just google it and there are a wealth of rescourses , pretty neat stuff

I recall seeing taxis, commercial vehicles using this system in Japan shortly after WWII while stationed in Nagoya. Stunk like hell, but the vehicles DID RUN and deliver people and produce to the market.

Yeah Tex; there are people in Western NA running their cars off used cooking grease from fast food restaurants; all you need it is a pre-heater and everywhere you go smells like frenchfries.

MalditoGringo;

Maybe you should "Google" the use of "cooking oil" forconversion to "biodiesel" before you start commenting like that.
It is just as good as the"real stuff" but requires a bit of pre-processing first.

With a simple set up involving Lye, and ethyl alchol it's possible to convert vegtable oil into bio-disel which has the same viscosity of petro-disel, hence no heating required One of the ventures I plan on developing when I finalize my relocation, think of all the rotting coconuts after being drained of the milk and tossed aside, Thats a valuable fuel rescourse.
