SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic will receive more than $2 billion in foreign investments this year, a figure the country’s Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) director Eddy Martinez calls a record.
He said all the investments are for private sector projects that don’t need approval by Congress.
One of the proposed projects, Martinez said, is by Spanish investors who seek to build a high speed train between the capital Santo Domingo and Santiago, which is in the study phase, and doesn’t require government spending.
President Leonel Fernandez first announced the high-speed train project in his recent tour of Europe, where he also met with Spanish investors interested in his country’s thriving tourism industry.
The CEI-RD director, in a statement posted on the official Web site cig.gov.do, said many of the projects and their locations have already been approved, while in others the lands have been bought and the architectonic designs concluded.
He added that in some of cases investors await only the financing, for approval by the Tourism and Environment ministries.

More Money, More Corruption, More Crime; Or depravity.
I believe this is what normally happens when societies become obsessed with "the love of Money".
I Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
I am always overjoyed of more prosperity coming to my nativeland or "Patria"; However, I often realize that money can't buy long lasting happiness, or help those that just can't get enough. It's funny that the funds hardly ever reach the most needy; the marginalized: "los hijos de Machepa". Most of the beneficiaries of most of the money that is invested in the country are just a few greedy, ambitious individuals. It never changes. And we thought that once Trujillo was dead, things would change???
Is sickening to see how our corrupted goverment gives a "C..." about enviroment, Haitian illegal inmigration, humane values, drugs, the whole country falling apart, etc.
Funny thing is that I'm still supporting our goverment since there is no other clean cut political party.
The more things change, the more the stay the same, it's been said.
"Los hijos de Ma' Chepa nunca benefician de los dollares, solo sufren dolores".
Isn't it strange that it's 'Spaniards' that will build this nationwide railway system in Quisqueya?
And 'Spaniards' that want to build the infamous Nafta Superhighway: Starting in Mejico, through Texas, the great plains straight to Canada. If I'm not mistaken these people were the one's who first began looting, pillaging, and exporting riches to Europe; The same concept continues today. They will soon own roads, and supervise toll booths here in the States; And they will own, and run trains in D.R. What a Raquet?
When money is handed out. First ask, what and who will benefit, and what are the consequences of accepting that money? Most of the time, the pay-off (trade-off) is terrible.
