SANTO DOMINGO. - The Government will soon announce the measures it’ll implement in commuter and freight transport, aimed at starting a modernization and reorganization process to clean up that sector, one of the major problems Dominicans still endure.

Industry and Commerce minister Melanio Paredes said Tuesday a proposal on public transport will be given to president Leonel Fernandez, with which he expects will solve that crisis. "I promise to the country that the measures that arise from the president’s announcement in the matter of transport is going to initiate a reorganization, modernization clean-up process in public and freight transport.”

The official, who spoke to reporters in the National Palace, said he’s looking for alternatives to solve that situation once and for all.

He said the proposals will be presented to drivers unions Wednesday in a meeting with Transport Reform Office director Diandino Peña.

In a related topic Paredes rejected that a Mafia manages the around 25 billion pesos monthly allocated for the diesel subsidy program. "That’s absolutely false because “even all the diesel used in the country doesn’t reach that amount.”

He did admit there are “distortions” and said they are already technically able to control it to apply the corrections for those distortions, making it more transparent to focus and control it."

Anyone who has ever seen a public bus knows that the system is in serious need of repair. These buses are a disgrace and we shouldn't expect that the people who allowed this to happen in the first place are going to be the ones to fix the problem.
