New York.– Oil prices surged past $143 a barrel for the first time ever Monday, and the price for a gallon of gas hit an all-time high in the United States.

Supply concerns and a fragile global economy continue to drive the price of oil to new highs, as well as continued tensions in the Middle East.

Light, sweet crude for August delivery rose $2.13 to $142.34 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In early electronic trading, the contract hit a record $143.67.

On Friday, crude futures had spiked at a record $142.99 a barrel in New York before falling to $140.21.

In London, Brent crude futures rose $2.24 to $142.55 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London. Earlier Monday, the price for Brent had peaked at $143.91.

A survey in the U.S., meanwhile, showed that prices at the pump continued to rise, with the national average for gasoline at $4.086 a gallon. The previous record of $4.08 was reached June 16

It did the same on Friday and then by the end of the day it was back to a cheap 140.00 (lol).

late selling saps a rally as the Dow finishes with its worst June since 1930. Crude oil tops $143 but falls back to $140. .

The greed of the speculative bourgeoisie in the finanical sector is not only insatiable, but also it is indiscriminate.

This element of the bourgeoisie is hurting the rest of the bourgeoisie as well as other classes.

The bourgeois ideology, the foul gospel of capitalism, commands bourgeois trash and garbage to kneel down, open its mouth and then reverently accept the will of capitalism as manifested by any stupid and lunatic course the market takes.

Rather than curb the speculative excesses and the fraud of the element of the bourgeoisie that is behind the soaring oil prices, it seems the mass of the bourgeoisie, contrary to its own interests, directs the flow of capital toward this ever expanding fraud committed in the petroleum exchanges in the hope of partaking of the extraordinary rates of profit this fraud generates.

Well lets see how this works in the DR.

The DR buys from Venezuela 50,000 barrels of fuel a day.

price is $140 a barrel. from Venezuela
DR pays $70. a barrel up front FOB Venezuela and is loaned the balance of $70. a barrel.

the DR population is charged market price at the pump for the fuel it purchases at $140 barrel FOB.

some thing wrong here can anyone spot it. what happended to the difference which totals $140 a a barrel.

Teflon Fernadez strikes again.

Here is the real hardship of rising oil prices, and it effects the large majority of Dominicans.

Assuming and average 25mpg and annual driving of 20,000 miles (I admit on an island as such it is hard to do...but for comparison only) the following reflects the fuel cost as a percentage of average yearly income per country.

United States

Average income $44970
Aveage Fuel Cost $4.10 gallon
Cost of driving 20000 miles $3280
% of income = 7.3%

Canada

Average income $36170
Aveage Fuel Cost $5.15 gallon
Cost of driving 20000 miles $4120
% of income = 11.4%

United Kingdom

Average income $40180
Aveage Fuel Cost $8.74 gallon
Cost of driving 20000 miles $6992
% of income = 17%

Dominican Republic

Average income $2850
Aveage Fuel Cost $5.85 gallon
Cost of driving 20000 miles $4680
% of income = 64% more than yearly income

To put this into context, if the average Dominican were to put 7.3% of thier income into fuel, that would buy them a little over 35 gallons of gas...which in turn would get them about 889 miles...or 4 round trips from Punta Cana to the capital.

Dominicans would love to have the hardships portrayed on the news about the US situation with fuel prices....me thinks the US should be quiet and just realize that they are one of the privaleged countries that on a per capita incme basis...pay very little for fuel.

WE INVENTED THE TECHNOLOGY that allows the extraction of oil, we prop up the regimes that profit from it, WE refine a good portion of it . Why shouldn't it be cheaper in the US ? I have no idea why we arn't getting a bigger cut of the Iraqi oil, you cant put gas in a camel anyway ! for $1 a gallon fuel why not spill some blood, as long as it isn't American blood.

Best brush up on your history Pappa...not everything came from America. The first well in North America was Canadian. The design and technology for drilling...Russian. The technology for today's society...mainly a worldwide mesh of intelligent people...as the case with most things these days....except the armed forces...if your closing statement reflects the attiude of your peers....which I doubt.

Your logic makes you unfit for service, if your last comment is your true feeling ,and a poor representative to the flag you honour.

PuntaCanaMike, the good Lord knows why `people like pappabowie are just beer -swilling grunts in the grand scheme of things. had any decision making powers been granted to him, he would use military force to kill all the races he does not like, and expropriate the wealth of conquered countries. thankfully, he probably just takes orders, not gives them. for that reason, the world is a slightly less miserable place.

Historicly "expropriation of wealth" was to be expected as the spoils of war. Why are we not allowed to dare I say profit from this mess as we are allready here and heavily invested, no matter what Barrak Osama says we are not going to surrender this strategic 'toe hold' in the worlds most volitile region. Why should the growth of communist china or India be our concern, If the Red army controlled the worlds energy supplies you could bet you bottom Euro that they would choke us off in a minute. Beleive me they are only biding their time while we exahust ourselves for free. My credo remains blood for oil, pretty good deal when you take into account how cheap life is in the oil rich areas. Now proceed to demonize my position but consider for a moment how you would like to have to ride a donkey around and read by candle light on a regular basis due to the impending energy crisis if We dont man up solve it at the end of a rifle.

actually, pappabowie, do not get me started on the world´s energy crisis. had it not been for the selfishness and sense of entitlement that americans such as yourself have, we would be in less of a mess. america has 5% of the world´s population, but uses up more than 25% of the world´s energy resources. while other people the world over, such as europe, were trying to economise and show some respect to the planet, your fellow americans were still rolling around in ford excursions and hummers, guzzling away at scarce and precious oil, with no care for the planet, because, once again, they see themselves as exceptional ,and deserving of more than others. it is only sad that when the crap hits the fan, all the world is going to suffer. if there was any justice in the world, the pain would fall squarely where it belongs, not on the innocents of the earth.!

the entertaining aspect of the impending crisis is that it is americans who are going to cry the loudest. you see, pappabowie, most of the other countries are accustomed to austerity, sacrifice, and hardship. for americans , hardship is deciding between Nike or Reebok. so when the crap hits the fan, we will see hordes of wall street brokers jumping off the chrysler building, nattily attired for the eternal journey in their armani suits. much wailing and gnashing of teeth, as hordes of financial automatons in wire rimmed glasses, toting weatherbeaten briefcases, congregate at the front doors of credit card scofflaws; the sheriffs and marshalls will be in tow, to expedite the repòssession and eviction proceedings. it will be a grand and lively circus, making for very high drama. meanwhile, pappabowie and his boys will down one more six pack of schlitz, belch ferociously, and pontificate entertainingly about the parasites of the earth.!

Goulet, instead of making emotional rants as responses to everything, you should try disputing facts instead. tell me one thing in that set of assertions which is untrue. does america have roughly 5% of the world's population? does it consume roughly 25% of the fossil fuel resources? are people still rolling around in hummers, while people in europe and asia drive city cars? if you just want to be contrarian, then pick a subject which can be refuted. we know your legendary penchant for being the scold of broadband, but at least be correct sometimes!

furthermore , Goulet, people such as myself, who are on a company payroll, cannot "take advantage" of uncle sam. it is merchant types, guys who buy and sell, who take advantage. they get their tax accountants and attorneys to rig the books and hide the profits, and pay little or no taxes. you never see a salaried person being hauled off to jail for tax evasion, except in very limited instances. it is always the merchant class, the criminal element who make tons of money buying cheap, selling dear, and hiding money. the laboring class does not take advantage of anything, as you put it. you probably believe deep down that i must be involved in some welfare or SSI fraud, hence your assertion of "taking advantage". sorry Goulet, we don't all scam welfare !
