ROME. - Dominican president Leonel Fernandez today announced a plan to produce ethanol from sugar cane and reduce the dependency on fossil fuels by using biofuels, during his speech in the summit on food security of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which began yesterday in Rome.
"We will shortly execute a national plan of ethanol production through sugar cane, which is compatible with the strategy of food security, and meanwhile will reduce our dependency on fossil fuels," said Fernandez, who noted the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, has affirmed that Dominican Republic’s favorable conditions in the short and mid term can make it “the Caribbean granary.”
Although the Dominican president said the current food crisis can become a "great opportunity for the national productive sector" and replace the imported farm products, he cautioned that the opportunity can fail, "from the protectionist policies and generalized subsidies to production and exports on the part of the developed countries.

bio fuel..... good idea but lets make sure that we are not replacing the land which grows our food products into land to produce bio fuels which in term will just worsen the food crisis..
what is needed it more investment on better transport systems.. look at switzerland,,, a great example of good tranportation systems.. and balance with the enviroment.

Unlike most of the other forty or so speakers who spoke today, the UN FAO's hasn't as yet published on FAO site, in any language, LF comments in Rome.
The DR Permanent Mission to the UN in NYC ditto.
The DR Embassy in DC has published a summary of the LF's comments in Rome in Spanish.
DT's article above suggests it wasn't all that bad.
But who knows until we get the official version which will pop out somewhere pretty soon.

There are two good reasons why the policy is a bad idea.
First, if you live in a developed capitalist country, like the USA, the policy of using food for fuel means rising food prices. In time, this will result in lower wages because you will work for anything in order to eat and this will also result in a lower standard of living because nutrition along with health care, education, and housing are common indicators used to measure living standards.
Second, if you live, on the other hand, in a poor developing country, like most of Latin America and the Caribbean, this policy means increased mass starvation and wider international famine which are unpleasant to most people, except US reactionaries like the infamous GOPs, most of whom can look upon the plight of millions of people starving to death with exquisite indifference or with the most satisfying malice.

People for the last time...Sugar Cane IS NOT FOOD!!! Sugar is a commodity which most of us could do away with or reduce considerably due to its detrimental effect on our systems. Producing Ethanol from the CEA lands does not have an impact on national food production..Lets not let all the politics get in the way of everything as is the norm here.

Using NON-staple foods or non-food forms of bio-mass to make ethanol limits world famine and reduces inflationary pressure on food prices more than using staples to make ethanol because human nutrition relies more on food than non-food and relies more on staples than non-staples.
So, is sugar a staple? Let's find out.
Is sugar food? Yes, of course.
"Most staple foods derive either from cereals such as wheat, barley, rye, maize [corn], or rice, or starchy root vegetables such as potatoes, yams, taro, and cassava. Other staple foods include pulses (dried legumes), sago (derived from the pith of the sago palm tree), and fruits such as breadfruit and plantains."

Besides, Lionel doesn't pass his time blaming the First World countries for all of the DR's ailments, as your "leader" is doing right now on Zimbabwe's situation, when the fact is that the fault for the zimbabwean economy's current plight is sorely his, with his stupid expropiation program against that country's landlords, the only excuse for this act of bandittry being that those poor landlords were white, and his squandering of the zimbabwean state's funds by making armed forays into neighbouring countries.

Today, more than half of Brazilian fleet of cars on the streets are able to use 100% ethanol as fuel, which includes ethanol-only engines and flex-fuel engines. Flex-fuel engines in Brazil are able to work with all ethanol, all gasoline, or any mixture of both. Brazil supports this population of ethanol-burning automobiles with large national infrastructure that produces ethanol from domestically grown sugar cane. Sugar cane not only has a greater concentration of sucrose than corn (by about 30%), but is also much easier to extract. The bagasse generated by the process is not wasted, but is utilized in power plants as a surprisingly efficient fuel to produce electricity.
During more than a decade that these ethanol conditions existed in Brazil, the price of sugar in Brazil has tended to fall, not rise as you seem to presume, because of a worldwide glut and domestic abundance.

On the other side of the coin.
In Brazil the rate of deforestation is largely driven by commodity prices and world population growth. Recent development of a new variety of soybean has led to the displacement of beef ranches and farms of other crops, which, in turn, move farther into the forest. Certain areas such as the Atlantic Rainforest have been diminished to less than 10% of their original size and the Amazon Rainforest is awaiting the same fate at 600 fires daily. In 2008, Brazil's Government has announced a record rate of deforestation in the Amazon.
This obviously contributes, along with the use of fossil fuels, to global warming.

The ironic of this so called food crisis is that for many years I had said that the D.R. is an agricultural heaven that was ignored and more emphasis was given to tourism. In earlier comments I stated that in the beginning of the 60's an American Embasador in his reports to the U.S. President stated that D.R. was so rich in its agricultural resources that it was self-sufficient. After that D.R. politicians slowly began to ignored that resource and now they want to rvived it. The world in general is not facing a food crisis but rather a crisis in government irresponsibilities and neglets. There is food but do you have the money to buy it. One of the major problem in Haiti, for example, is that haitians are less caring towards their own kinds. There are a lot of Haitians in the U.S., enough for them to have created another class by sending dollars to their love ones as dominicans do and other latin americans. Their leaders are just as destructive as any other around the world.
