MARACAIBO.- President Leonel Fernandez met yesterday with Jamaica prime minister and Caricom coordinator Bruce Golding, who offered his country’s support to participate in a meeting of 57 petroleum importing countries, whose income per capita doesn’t surpass US$6,000.

In the bilateral meeting, after the end of the gathering of chief executives of countries members of Petrocaribe, the two leaders spoke about the situation the small economies undergo, faced with the jumps in the price of oil.

The activity, proposed by the Dominican leader, will be part of a meeting of Foreign Relations ministers from 57 countries slated for July 21 in New York, where they’ll request a halt to the speculation with the price of oil.

Approved in the Petrocaribe Summit was Fernandez’s proposal for the New York and London Stock markets to regulate futures contracts, aimed at eliminatnig the speculation with oil prices.

Leonel lives in a dream world and not in a real world.

He is becoming a world leader. A powerful figure. He is president of the second largest caribbean country and soon to become the most influential outside of Puerto Rico.

Why would stock exchanges regulate what occurs on futures exchanges?

there we go again with the resident king of bragging rights, ny4life. just what is Leonel going to influence, pray tell? and where? powerful figure? do you have any concept of world politics? if you cannot influence world conditions, you are not a powerful figure. George Bush is powerful ( albeit loathsome) the Saudi sheiks are powerful. the leaders of the g8 are powerful. the leader of a country which has difficulty keeping the lights on is not powerful. try to gain some perspective!

What a fool.... Does he really think if he says it, it will happen?

Who believes this load of crap?

Alternative energies fool. Is it so hard to get your head around this concept?

as i said once before ,gmiller, this government has no interest in promoting alternative energies, because the politicos and generalissimos will lose out on some income. they do not want to witness the spectacle of guys buying their own windmills on E-bay. they cringe at the thought of people buying solar panels on Bizrate. they want the pickings all for themselves, and devil take the hindmost. so it will be more of business as usual, with ny4life cheering on Leonel to ïnfluence¨world events!

The man is a legent...in his own mind. Let's see what he has to say tomorrow. I hope it is something better than the "da me algo" plan he's got there. Anything would be better. Or maybe just a quick lesson on how supply demand theory because I miss Econ 101 so many years ago. Listening to him talk sometimes brings back such fond memories except in in Econ 101 we used to use alcahole and pizza as our standard theoretica examples, not oil.

To gmiller "Who believes this load of crap?" ...unfortunately my friend, about 57% of Dominicans.....
