SANTO DOMINGO.- The vice president of the Dominican State power companies CDEEE yesterday said as of today the blackouts will discontinue with the entry into the system of around 400 megawatts.

Radhamés Segura attributed the energy crisis that affected the country for more than 15 days to technical failures and financial problems he said have been already corrected

In a press conference Sunday the official said the power companies were instructed to maintain their output at 85 percent so the sectors which receive the least energy get 18 hours of service.

The national energy demand is around 2,000 megawatts and the current generation is of around 1,700 megawatts.

Today the CDEEE will pay US$4 billion of the US$16 million owed to the power company Cogentrix, which contributes 300 megawatts to the system and which had shut down several plants.

Since yesterday several plants around the country began to enter the system, after debts were paid and failures corrected, Segura said.

He said another factor affecting the power grid is that the hydroelectric, which contribute almost 200 megawtts, have been generating less as the lack of rain maintains their waters levels low.

Really? Finally after how many years of haphazard service? I know, I worked for "La Corporacion Dominicana de Electricidad" en la feria, under Julio Sauri back in the 1970's. What an outfit that was! Politically appointed jobs (botellas): which I was one of such employees.
Now, let's hope and pray that this will bring stabilization to a shaky situation, where random blackouts were and are a way of live. What a way to run a business, or a country for that matter. What I think is needed is competition. Where I live there are several power companies with intersecting territories.
Hopefully now the era of sub-standard 'modern' living will end. Welcome to the 21st Century.
I hope it lasts. We need a better means of providing electricity than what has been offered until now. Now, if we could only run the trains on time!

Sounds too good to be true? You mean we will not longer be groping around in the dark and running into furniture? no more falling down the stairs in the dark? .. shall I throw away my night vision goggles? no more enduring the heat with no fans running? no more sitting around and watching our food spoil? no more spending thousands buying generators? what shall we do with all the free time on our hands? And where are we going to get the oil required to run all those power plants at peak capacity to meet peak loads? Where did we get the money to suddenly pay off those debts? Does it mean our rates are going up?

GC;

All of the above is the answer.
The problem with the Electrical Service in the DR is very easy to solve.
Make sure to pay for what is produced and used; not for the production capacity alone. Void the infamous Madrid Accord.
Quit giving just "First Aid" where a major operation is needed.
Fire all the employees, hire foreign mangers and workers, pay them for the work that they do and demand 24/7 electrical service. Then, if they don't provide that, fire those and start all over again. Sooner or later, they'll catch on to what is needed.

Is that Seguro guy saying we only had an energy crisis for the past "15 days"? Well then, my name is Rip Van Winkle and I have been asleep for 8 years .. and exactly how do the black outs end when you only meet 85% of the MW load? Well then, it seems that I and this Seguro guy went to different schools together.

This article demonstrates the necessity of removing the private bourgeoisie entirely from the energy sector.

"Companies were instructed to maintain their output at 85 percent so the sectors which receive the least energy get 18 hours of service," DT reports.

Does that mean the "sectors which receive ... energy" will not get 6 hours of service? What about sectors that don't receive energy? How will they switch their light on?

And, what does the private bourgeoisie in the energy sector care about "instructions" from the DR state? Nothing!

Today, capitalist competition no longer means companies compete by lowering prices for goods and services to grab larger market share. Today, these companies compete by hiking their prices to balloon gross income. If you don't pay the ballooning prices ... that is, the new competitive principle, then the companies cut you off.

"Today the CDEEE will pay US$4 billion of the US$16 million owed to the power company Cogentrix, which contributes 300 megawatts to the system and which had shut down several plants" DT reports.

I suppose they mean $4 million rather than $4 billion, but you never know.

Does CDEEE really owe Cogentrix the $16 million or did Cogentrix turn off the lights to shake down CDEEE for the 16? If that's the case, Cogentrix is going to raise its rates again ... soon ... to shake down CDEEE for 32 million next time. "LF is using Petrocaribe money to subsidize electricity, so let's grab before our competitors grab."

"Since yesterday several plants around the country began to enter the system, after debts were paid and failures corrected, Segura said," DT reports.

It seems the "private sector" in the energy went on strike and left the system, like Cogentrix, to shake down the CDEEE for as much money as they can extort.

The state should bust their capitalist "union."

Hire a rainmaker and nationalize the whole energy sector. Kick the incompetent, buck-passing, and greedy private bourgeoisie out.

The 15 days he was referring to were the last 15 of "unusually" high number and length of blackouts not the overall braoder crisis. What I think is funny is that over the last two weeks while sectors were complaining about the increased outages Segura was saying to the press that it was just a figment of their imagination. What a difference a day can make.

Of course I think it is only us pendejos that even pay attention to anything they say in the press. Does anyone else get that feeling?

OH .. so sorry .. I guess I must have been asleep for the past 15 days as well .. now lets see .. the last time I checked there were 24 hours in a day .. so if the system can supply only 18 hours of electricity out of those 24 hours .. we will have a total of 24-18 = 6 hours of no electricity .. aka a blackout .. which is slightly better than the 8 and 9 hour blackouts .. but still not exactly an end to the blackouts as we are being led to believe in this story .. but the final proof will be in the pudding .. let's see if they can go past the noon hour today .. and tomorrow .. and the day after ..

Belial;
It is the Govrnment owned CDEEE that is making all the noise. Hippo bought out the Privaate companies in 2002 andthe $hit hit the fan with rolling blackouts all over the country. It was bad befor that, but the government put in their incompetent "botello men" and things went to hell in a handbasket.
It is a proven fact that NO government can run a business venture efficiently. Their answer to EVERYTHING is add more people to make up for the inefficiency of the bureaucracies.
Hell, this government can't even run itself efficiently, much less a business with uneducated nincompoops for managers.
So, it isn't the bourgeoisie that is at fault. It's those who think like you do that have the opinion that the government can do everythiong better than those trained an expert in their field.
Better go back to school and get your thinking squared away befor you blab again.

Bote - you are free here. You can make up words. As long as they acurately convey a meaning.

I haven't asked for an actual definition of "trolltalitarian" but my understanding when I first read the word was that it is a toung in cheek hybrid of "troll" and "totalitarian" used to refer to the practice (tolling) of some people to lurk in the background of a thread (like trolls under bridges) waiting for an unsuspecting poster to leave an innocently loose comment or a keyword that the troll can then choose to misinterpret in a way that is convenient for them to use as an excuse to hijack the entire thread and turn it into a personal agenda based on their own individually twisted world view from which they launch of on diatribes peppered with unsubstantiated data presented as diety endorsed fact and personal insults and general lack of tolarance for anyone that chooses to challenge them. The result is a quickly desroyed thread to which all the rational participants leave instantly.

If you watch long enough you will see Goulet baiting the trolls out from under the bridge with targeted culturally based insults.

I'm not sure why he does it. It seems that he gets some sort of sadistic joy out of turning their crank. Pesonally I would prefer it if he would leave the trolls alone so until such time as they choose to come out on their own the rest of us can continue to enjoy what ever thread there is.

Lately Goulet has been more considerate of my feelings but I know he is oft itching to drag one out to the open (some particular individuals especially) and since this is the Internet and a "free world" I guess we have to respect his fun once and a while also.
