Santo Domingo.- The construction of the Pinalito dam in Constanza, as well as other hydroelectric projects, must be part of the Government's priorities to face the country’s energy challenges, said a deputy of the ruling PLD party.

Ruben Maldonado said Pinalito’s construction should be number one in the Government’s pubilc works agenda to address the problems stemming from the rise in oil prices and noted that the country’s hydroelectrics put out about 20 percent of the national consumption, which he said has helped ease the crisis.

Maldonado, a member of the lower Chamber’s Energy and Mines Committee, said the Government should allocated the funds to conclude the dam, which is 95 percent finished, and include it in the supplementary budget the Executive Branch will send to Congress. “The same as with other dams, Pinalito should be built without further delay.”

Did anybody oppose the completion of a dam that's 95% finished?

On hurricane grounds, population relocation, design flaw, or something?

Since hydroelectric dams do not burn fossil fuels, they do not directly produce carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas). The reservoirs of power plants in tropical regions may produce substantial amounts of methane and carbon dioxide. This is due to plant material in flooded areas decaying in an anaerobic environment, and forming methane, a very potent greenhouse gas.

This can also happen without a dam.

Also, hydroelectric projects can be disruptive to surrounding aquatic ecosystems both upstream and downstream of the plant site.

But the need for energy is so extreme. The major advantage of hydroelectricity is elimination of the cost of fuel.

In LA/C, Brazil of course has the biggest hydro-electro capacity with 350 terawatt hours, the third largest capacity in the world, followed in the region by Venezuela with 74 TWh, 9th in the world.

This dam is just another instance where the DR is a party to the di-hydro monoxide epidemic(for lack of a better word). It will be used for its accumulation in the reservoir.

AnthonyC must be full of himself. He called a slide in the price a fews weeks ago and babbled about going short. The price is down about $20 from the record high. But 120 a barrel is not a dollar-store deal.

Now I have started dabbling in chemicals. If you can't beat them join them. Seems that the demand for di-hydro monoxide is far outstripping supply. Buy Buy Buy!!!

Latest report is that the funds with which to complete the dam are included in the Budgetary Supplement sent to the Legislature by Leonel.
