SANTO DOMINGO.- Colombia’s government will begin talks with Dominican authorities to supply hydraulic energy, which would entail the construction of an underwater cable across the Caribbean Sea.

The project would be part of the South American country’s strategy to develop and expand its energy capacity installed in the region, where it already sells to Ecuador and Venezuela, and also proposed talks to Puerto Rico several months ago.

In Dominican Republic the first meeting will take place Friday between Colombian Mines and Energy minister Hernán Martinez Torres, and National Energy Commission president Arístides Fernandez Zucco.

Colombia’s ambassador Juan Jose Chaux confirmed the meeting, but didn’t offer details. “We are going to talk of that topic, it has been arranged."

The Associate Press and newspapers Primera Hora and Portafolio of Colombia, and La Prensa, of Panamá reported yesterday that if an underwater cable was to be built across the Caribbean to link Puerto Rico and Colombia, it would be the world’s longest, a distinction currently claimed by the 700 megawatt capacity NorNed, which spans 580 kilometers between Holland and Norway.

This is the IDIOT'S GUIDE FOR AN ENERGY PLAN? What difference does it make if you are dependent on OPEC for oil and Columbia for Electricity?

What if the RD imported technology of Nuclear Engineers for 4 state-of-art power plants @ remote locales or an isolated offshore island?

What if the RD Gov like Brazil created a diverse energy policy producing its own energy cheaper to be more globally COMPETITIVE?

This new energy creates installation JOBS for a UNDERGROUND transmission & distributions lines w/high security voltage substations providing power & fiber optic communications in ALL RD AREAS (no copper wire thefts).

This would power a NATIONAL RAIL SYSTEM connecting major ports from POP to STI, LaVega, Bonao to SDQ, LRM and PUJ to move both people & EXPORT/IMPORT goods FASTER!

Secondarily, an inner city cable cars like San Fran, CA eliminating OLD HIGH COSTS gas guzzling bus monopolies polluting the air more while being more globally competitive to attract more jobs!.

Electricity can be economically transmitted over distances up to 4000 miles .. with losses of 7% in transmission .. so this undersea cable looks good .. but we still have to look at the initial capital requirements and OMR over a reasonable amortization period .. 30 years? .. at a reasonable rate of interest .. 3%? ..

trujillo, forget nuclear. countries have to get the approval of the Atomic Energy Agency in order to embark on a nuclear program. with the DR's track record in conventional methodologies, do not expect such approval any time soon. it is not simply a matter of saying " if i cannot get nuclear technology from country A, i will seek it from B." it does not work like that in the convoluted world of nuclear!

I can produce videos of president Bush saying as much. The WMDs proved to be non existent. I can produce extensive sources proving as much. The reasons you cited WERE NOT the reasons given for invasion. If genocide was a reason for invasion the we should've been in Darfur a long time ago, don't you think? Some Americans listening today may wonder why events taking place in a small country halfway around the world matter to the United States. In the years since it’s gained independence after the Soviet Union’s collapse, Georgia has become a courageous democracy. Its people are making the tough choices that are required of free societies. Since the Rose Revolution in 2003, the Georgian people have held free elections, opened up their economy, and built the foundations of a successful democracy.

Georgia has sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq to help others achieve the liberty that they struggled so hard to attain. To further strengthen their democracy, Georgia has sought to join the free institutions of the West. The people of Georgia have cast their lot with the free world, and we will not cast them aside.

Georgia’s emergence as a young democracy has been part of an inspiring and hopeful new chapter in Europe’s history. Europe has moved beyond the world wars that killed millions of people, and the Cold War that divided its citizens between two superpowers. Every administration since the end of the Cold War has worked with European partners to extend the reach of liberty and prosperity. And now, for the first time in memory, Europe is becoming a continent that is whole, free, and at peace. ... George W Bush early this morning

That's the dumbest statement that I have read in a long time. How do you think Eastern Europe came to be under the Soviet banner, anthonyC? Do you think that the americans and the british helped them conquer all those countries? Please, meditate more your posts before sending them. As things stands, it was the other way around. Lautoro,
Go check your history.

The US sent over 6000 fighter planes, 1000's of Tanks and 100's of Millions of $$$$ in AID to the Soviets during WW2.

The US and British Strategic Bombing Campaign crippled the Germans Industrial Complex. Do you think the Soviets would have lasted if German industry could have pumped out 10,000 Tiger Tanks instead of 1000? 1000's of Messershcmidt 263's instead of a few hundred? Arado's, Panther's?
Remember the Germans were trying to develop an Atomic Bomb as well. They were years behind the US but the Soviets had no clue. They only built their's in 49 after they recieved the info from spies.

Also remember the US was fighting 2 wars. Remember Japan? The Russians didn't jump in until a week before it was over.

Yes i know more Soviet Soldiers died. That is because Soviet Military leaders sent them to their deaths in wave attacks. Soviet Military Strategy is studied at many acadamies on how not to fight a war.

Yes, but you can't ignore the fact that, even with all their defficiencies, the soviet military not only took the full brunt of the german's military might, but they'd also almost outrun the british and the americans on the race to conquer Berlin (and this despite the fact that these people had it easy, if we were to compare the odds they faced with the ones that the Soviets, badly supplied and armed, had to overcome).

what is even more critical, in my opinion, is the contextual translation of articles. too often we get some sort of literary stylings which do not convey the true meaning of the article, creating misunderstandings and misconceptions. i remember, for instance, an article with the heading "Dominicans spend tax refund in the DR", or something similar. the article then went on to offer a number of options for spending the money here, such as hotel accomodations, fine restaurants ,etc. if you did not know that the refund checks were not due for another six weeks, you would have thought that droves of Dominicans were spending big bucks from their refunds as you read!

The reason for not taking direct military action with Russia is not their fighting ability but they have nukes sub launched and land launched ICBMs.
Their equipment and training is not on par with the west. They are just willing to lose thousands just to make a statement and if public opinion is against them they just censor what the public has to base the opinion on.
But what exactly does this have to do with an under sea cable?

Goulet, you are preaching to the choir. i was one of the people who always held to the belief that the Cold War was a hoax, because the Russians had bombs, but the jury was out as to whether or not their delivery systems could hit the side of a barn. i bought a Russian clock in Times Square in the mid-eighties, and the thing ran backwards!!! i also was foolish enough to buy a Russian 35 millimeter SLR camera, and never got a single print from it, as nobody could figure out the way to extricate an exposed roll of film without ripping it to shreds. ever driven in a Lada? but bombs is bombs!! what the heck does it matter if the bomb is intended for Cleveland and lands in Pittsburgh?

Not to mention the huge stock piles of munitions they posses throughout the vast territory(ies) of Russia. In addition I would not underestimate Russia. Goulet, lean and mean do not mean crap in today's world of warfare. the USA had all the hardware and equipment, plus the training, in Vietnam, and had to run away and leave it behind. the Russians had all the stuff in afghanistan, and ended up sucking wind. a few judiciously delivered nukes is all it takes to wipe out any advantage you might have over the next guy. the arsenals that Russia still possesses means that they are not to be toyed with. if you can hit them with a 50 megaton bomb, and all they have is a 35 megaton, who wins? and stop asserting that people who make arguments are cheerleading one side or the other. war is not my forte. i am a caribbean spirit. we do not have a history of wanting to fight anybody, except with boxing gloves laced up. we do not ever think of attacking or invading our neighbors. pillaging a few of their women...well, that's another subject for another day.

The crisis over Russia's display of military might in Georgia has alarmed ex-Soviet satellites states in a broad arc from the Baltics to Central Asia. Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, all of which harbour bitter memories of Soviet occupation, have expressed solidarity with the Georgian position.

Yesterday President George W. Bush hailed what he saw as progress in resolving the Georgia crisis, describing the ceasefire agreement as "a hopeful step."

He reiterated, though, that the disputed regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia remained part of Georgia, despite Moscow's insistence that they should now be allowed to become part of Russia. "There's no room for debate on this matter," said Mr Bush. "The international community is clear that South Ossetia and Abkhazia are part of Georgia and the US fully recognises this reality."

Meanwhile, disturbing reports of abuse of ethnic Georgians in captured parts of the disputed region emerged. A group of captive soldiers were paraded in the streets of the South Ossetian capital, Tskinvali, and the bodies of at least 40 dead troops rotted in the sun.

Teams of ethnic Georgians, some under armed guard, were forced to clean the streets. It was the first apparent evidence of humiliation or abuse of Georgians in the Russian-controlled breakaway republic......ladrone you chicken oh the bomb blasts scared you povrecito you chicken go back to the DR you dont deserve to live in the USA you chicken

Yes, but you can't ignore the fact that, even with all their defficiencies, the soviet military not only took the full brunt of the german's military might, but they'd also almost outrun the british and the americans on the race to conquer Berlin

They took the full brunt because they had the worst Military Leadership on the planet. After Stalin purged the Military in the 30's the basic Soviet game plan was full frontal assault.

They arrived in Berlin only because FDR gave it to them. Learn your history.
